Is there a simple formula that can be used to work out what resistor(s) are needed for an LED with a 9v or 12v battery...

I know it's considered a bit "chavvy" but I've been considering fitting some white, forward facing LED lighting to the inside of the fairing infill on the GPZ... Embarassed

I can get LEDs from my local Maplin, and I'm OK with a soldering iron etc, so was planning to wire the LEDs and a switch and a 9v or 12v battery into a plastic enclosure.

The problem I have is that it's so long since I did this type of work, that I've forgotten how to work out the resistance value.. Thumbs Up

Why not get some that have them built in ?

To work out the resistance you need to know the forward voltage and typical current for the LED you have chosen. The value of resistor is then:

R = (Vbat-Vled)/Iled

So, for a 12V battery, a 1.2V LED needing 20mA (0.02A) the equation is:

R = (12 - 1.2) / 0.02

R = 540 Ohms.

Make sure you wire the LED the right way round!!

Its quite easy! I have installed two blue LEDs on my NSR. These need 30mA each, therefor I use 470 ohm's resistors.

Here is a simple circuit diagram I have made:

Here is what you need. You can also use contuctortape.

here you can see me testing the LED's with a 9V battery.

Thanks to teasbag and Fr1g1. That's the calculation that I was looking for.

I used to do this type of work for modding computers etc, but lost loads of my plans etc during a house move.

My father is a policeman, and say it's only illegale to drive with them on, but it's 100 percent leagle to use them when the bike stands still.

My girlfriend as a police as neighbour, and almost every night my bike stand next to his car, with the LED's on. He have seen my bike a thousen times, but haven't said anything.

i'm not sure if this is the same in the US and UK.

Sorry for my bad english:P

To take the thread off topic then from this earlier thread of mine. According to ACPO guidelines...
Quote:
Coloured headlamps, intervention recommended only if the light cover is red, VDRS is recommended as the primary option. Advice to be given for colours other than white.

This only refers to covers, not bulbs. I also have it that only emergency vehicles registered as such can show a blue light. It's a seperate bit not normally quoted in the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations.

However, doesn't seem to bother the local chavs or HGV drivers around here.

HTH Thumbs Up

I looked into the regulations regarding vehicle lights quite extensively as I was confirming a loophole regarding amber flashing lights on vehicles, and their possible eligability for fitment on a bike for filtering.

Blue lights on a non-emergency vehicle,. on the public highway is illegal, end of story.

Just for the record, I edited my original post slightly to clarify my original plan...
to have forward facing white leds inside the fairing infill (so that the glow shows thru the air intake).

(I realise I'll have to put switch(es) in there so that they can be easily switched off should Mr Plod take offence.)

Mr Plod should be quite happy. It's not an offence to show white light to the front. If switched just suggest switched with ignition. If you're headlight isn't on all the time they'll just act as daylight running lights.
