I know summer's here and the like, but unfortunately, like last year, i won't be here to enjoy what's left of it (pissing rain and shit etc). Upon my return, i've got a job at the Torness Nuclear power station near edinburgh and realise that i will be commuting 50 odd miles per day on my bike, so it needs to be in reasonable nick and also i need to get a rough idea of tyres nowadays that'll last the distance on a motorway/A road commute ( i won't be hooning or doing random blasts or track riding) so i need some recommendations. I use dunlop qualifiers on my bike and so far, have been impressed with their wet and dry grip and the amount of feedback i get from them, but the rear is squaring off after 2500 odd miles and i see that there's probably only going to be 500-700 odd miles left in them.

I've been onto THIS SITE to check out tyre deals and just wondering from personal feedback which one to choose?

I'm keen to know what people's personal experiences are on the newer tyres.

You got that many miles out of a set of qualifiers! I'd say don't worry then if you can scrape that many miles, buy what you can get cheapest. I only managed 1800 on mine and they were well shafted.

I'd look at something dual compound to give you the extra mileage you seek, unless you fancy a full on touring tyre?

So far I've been pretty happy with my Pilot roads.
They are all round, tour profile sorta tyres so i expect to get a good distance out of them, but they provide excellent grip in both the wet and dry.

According to THIS SITE you will be able to get 6,000 miles from the rear.

i ran BT20/BT21s on the VFR400R when I was long distance commuting. Worked a treat.

how you8 ride will have more of an effect than simply tyre choice.

I do know someone on an R1 who rides his Pilot Powers rather hard, and gets damned good mileage out of them tho.

I have the Pilot Road 2's on the 600rr and happy so far but only 1000 miles or so on them, but feel stickier than the pilot sports they replace (old type of tyre). Will let you know this time next year (although 9000 miles might be asking a bit too much, we shall see)

Have you condsidered Continental Road Attacks?

Nick Sanders had his R1 shod in them when he went round the world a couple of years back.

Stradas for me, I had a set on my old 99 ZX6R and they handled perfectly, never slid, even on the track. imo much better than BT020's.

I never got around to seeing how long they lasted but I know someone who got 10,000miles from a rear on a Hornet! I've heard reports of people getting an easy 6,000miles on 1000cc sports bikes.

Looks like i'm pretty content on getting the Stradas at the moment since they're the cheapest and that i was recommended by the tyre place to get that or the bridgies. Strada's seem cheaper mind than the 021's at the time being.

Was pleased with AV45/46 azaros on the 1100-8000 miles on the rear.

BT020s lasted well on my FJ1200, similar sorts of mileages.

Also had D220 dunlops on the 1100, not as good in the cold as the Azaros but plenty grippy when warm,

Currently got Pilot Road 2`s on the Speed Four.
Only just over 250 miles on them but very happy with the grip.

I've currently got a set of Pilot Powers on my Cat and I'm pretty impressed with them. Done roughly 800 miles and not a hint of squaring yet as opposed to my Diablo which had sod all grip and started to square off quickish.

How far did you get on them? I got 1500 miles out of a rear on my Hornet, and I ride like a pussy!

Take a look at https://www.tst-tyres.co.uk/ I use these guys and they have always been very helpful when choosing the right tyre for my bikes.

Tony Salt has an excellent CV and I trust his judgement.
