Music whilst riding...

I thought id post this in here and get peoples opinions on this one. Do people listen to music whilst riding? I mean like Ipods, Walkmans etc? Ive never actually done it but i miss listening to my music on the longish journeys, seems to me it might pose a safety issue though? Listening to the road, causing a distraction ect ect? Just wondered what peoples views are on this.

I do most fo the time, normaly only 1 earphone so i can still hear the road etc but my bike does normaly drown the music out (4t 125)

With both ear phones in you can hear clearly but obv makes it a lot harder to hear the road etc, still if you do sufficient obvs you shoudent need your ears.

Quick note, i use in ear headphones as i found 'normal' ones that stick out from your ear to cause problems with my helmet etc

i do normally ride with one earphone in on long journeys, but i tend to find that whilst riding i concentrate to much on the road to hear the song anyway..

Nope. I figure turning up the head phones to drown out the wind noise would damage your hearing more than riding without ear plugs.

I always use ear plugs anyway.

Yeah i guess that makes more sence with just the one earphone, not like you can change the track your listening to on the move either. You guys both use Ipods?

Would never and have never used music on the bike. Earplugs are the only thing I will wear in my ears. No point covering up one loud noise with another, but this time even closer to your ear drum.

I do and I use both earphones. I have it loud enough to hear but loud enough so I can hear the bike and everything around me.

I've never had a problem with not being able to hear cars, horns, sirens, etc. The only thing I can hear is when someone is talking to me in a normal tone.

I only wear them however when I'm commuting or going for a blast but won't if I have a pillion or following some friends.

TBH I'm more concentrated with the music on because sometimes when I don't have anything and all I hear is my bike I start to lose concentration. I've no idea why but I'm more concentrated with music on.

One ear phone all the time. Unless its a short 10 mile journey.
I get utterly bored other wise.

Only on long motorway journeys when i need the alertness because of the humdrum motorway slog do i wear earphones - I've got them sony ear-bud design types which is cool because they sit inside your earhole perfectly insulating wind noise, and i put it on 1/2 volume.

In london or town is a NO NO, you're constantly alert and your music serves as a distraction and can tamper about with you emotions making you more prone to having a provoked accident - like playing chicken with a bus on a set of temporary traffic lights (yes, the light was green but the stupid bus turned into the road from the bus station without even checking his lights!)

I don't play music at all when riding, cos I think I may get too distracted. I prefer to concentrate on the riding, my running commentary, and planning ahead etc.
But having said that I've only been riding regularly for less than a year, so still consider myself to be a bit of a newbie

I have listened to music a couple of times. A couple in one ear and once in two ears. Two ears is a definate no no, couldn't hear shit!b One ear i find fine but you have to have it loud to hear it properly. Might work better if you had an earplug in one and earphone in the other.

One of these threads again I don't wear earphone's/listen to music, haven't tried it because it's too easy to lose yourself Imo. I'd rather listen to the engine or my surroundings and know what's going on fully.

I put headphones in for the first time the other weekend.

Doing a 200 mile journey on a GT550, cruising speed ~80mph in the pissing rain, I needed something to keep me awake.

Worked pretty well actually, made an otherwise miserable trip quite bearable.

I listen to music on my W880i with the provided hands-free headset. I clip the hands-free mic part to the underside of my lid near my mouth so I can receive calls without pressing anything.

Sound is good as they are "in-the-ear" but as long as you're observant most bikes more chance of moving out of the way of blues and 2's than any car due to your size and acceleration I guess.

sort of a mixed bag of opinions then, just a little off topic but those people that do use in-helmet hands-free mobilephone kits, what are you guys using and do you find it works? Its just ive been looking for a decent kit for a while (im on a budget however) and its better to have peoples honest opinions on these things rather than the spotty 18yo in carphone warehouse who hasnt got a driving licence let alone a bike.

I use the little outside noise input I get through my helmet to help me get through my ride safely.

I wouldn't do the music on the bike thing, to be honest I'm not too sure about the music in the car thing - I'm farly sure it contributes to the cardrivers inattention to what is happening around them.

Personally I prefer listening to my engine noise, although from time to ime I do end up singing inside the safety of my lid.

I don't wear ear plugs and the damage is somewhat beneficial especially when you go to do some training with an instructor and his radio that killed my ear last time but thanks to bike exhausts its not as overpowering as it was now i tried to get him to turn it down a bit before and he said that i won't need to turning down when i go along...but i did and after going back to him months later it don't hurt now. If i had earphones i would want to plug them into the exhaust
