Photography - wide angle lens?

I know there are quite a few photography buffs on this site, so I'm asking for a little help.

I've tried google and ebay, but maybe my searches aren't being worded correctly, because I'm not coming up with the product I'm looking for. Also: google keeps returning only the USA cannon site in my searches. :/

What I'm looking for is a wide-angle lens that will mount on the body of my Cannon EOS digital camera.

I have the Sigma 10-20 lens for my 350D. Bloody good piece of kit IMO....

How wide angle do you want? I have the 17-40 F4 which works well. There are wider angle lenses avaiable, but not sure how much they would be used in reality.

That Tesco page that bazza linked to seems strange. Picture of one lense then spends the description talking about the 70-300 (also the price given for the 20-35 is about double what you can get it for in the UK).

I believe that shot was made by merging several photos together. You can see where the images are "spliced" in the sky; they are all distinctly different colors/tones.

I'm not sure exactly how wide an angle I'd like, still looking around. The link you gave for comparing prices is incredibly helpful, kickstart.

Canon do the 10-22mm which is as wides as you'll get I think, it costs about 500 quid but it's widely regarded as a fantastic piece of kit. If you're budget doesnt stretch that far I think Tamron and Tonkina both do comparable lenses for a lot less money. Here's some pics taken with the 10-22mm (not mine sadly)

What model EOS do you have? The 350D and the 400D are 1.6x crop cameras so you'll waste the lower end of the zoom (10mm lens = 16mm on a 1.6 crop camera). If you have something like the 5D then 10mm actually = 10mm.

Be worth keeping in mind when purchasing.

Yes, an 18mm would be the equivalent of a 28.8

Even some of the more expensive EOS 1's have a 1.3 crop.

I forgot to mention that the 1.6 crop also lets you shoot through the 'sweet spot' of most lenses so you get a good picture from corner to corner more often than not. Full format cameras sometimes need correction in Photoshop (or similar) to deal with the light loss in the corners.

Most definitely 'enthusiastic amateur' its something I love doing, but haven't quite made it my job

I have got a few bits on iStockPhoto - nature, bikes, people, and I've been shooting portfolios for friends (opera singers mainly, but have done a couple of other people shoots). I've started doing weddings too now.

Picture quality isn't affected by the crop factor that much, you only notice the difference in sensor quality. I've shot some great images using a 400D (and prior to that a 350D).

The thing you'll be needing more than anything else for shooting some of the city scape type images (pictured above in another post) is a decent, heavy-ish tripod (some tripods have a little hook in the centre that you can hang your camera bag from to add weight and stability. The long shutter speed will highlight any and all movement of the body.

Another thing you may want to consider; if you plump for the Canon 10-22 EF-S, the S stands for short back-focus. It's designed specifically for the crop sensor D-SLRs such as the 350. As a result, if (and most probably when) you become addicted and decide to invest in a full frame body, the 10-22 won't be compatible.

Saying that, I bought the very same lens earlier this year, and 'tis very nice (cost about 460 quid if I recall correctly).

15mm fish on a 5D. You can't see them but my shoes were up against the wall.
Second shot. The camera was just above the head of the dark haired lady at the bottom of the image, perhaps just 6 inches away. I might buy another 5D just for this lens, works a treat.
