I love to pull wheelies on the ole R6. 1st gear are no problem, but 2nd and 3rd cant do very well at all.

I was going to stick a 50t renthal blue sprocket on the rear, but have been told that I would need to go down on the front.

Why? and what combination would you recommend for better take off and wheelies?

Twisted Evil Regards

Gor for 2 down on the front, 2 up on the back. Korn figured that's one of the best combinations.

You'll want to lose some teeth from the front mainly so that your chain will fit/last longer...unless you're getting a new chain with your sprocket. Similarly, if you lose 2 teeth from the front (and not add any to the rear), you may need take a link out of the chain.

I would have thoulght that two up and two down would cancel each other out and give the same gearing?

Oh well what do I know? Confused

Wouldn't I just be able to move the wheel forward in the swing arm, so that the chain is the right length? That way no need to change the front sprocket. Confused

Yes, but if you are increasing the amount of chain needed by that much, then you will need a smaller front. 1 down at the front is the same as 3 at the back as well (i think)

Whatever you do don't just go one down at the front. I did and I got slower 1/4 mile times by .2secs. Probably due to the early gear-change needed. I only notice the front coming up easier in the powerband (or when I didn't want it to while dragging)

I'm running 14/50 520 sprockets at the moment, as opposed to the standard 16/48 532 settup. This combination keeps the total number of teeth the same, meaning the wheelbase is kept the same.

I have the 520 chain/sprockets because it reduces the rotational mass,- the first thing the engine has to move is the chain and sprockets, so by lessening their weight you allow the engine to spin up faster. This is a common mod done by racers. However it can make power delivery at low speeds a bit jerky.

Putting a 50t on the rear will not make much difference, dropping one tooth at the front will have more effect. Downgearing your bike will also make the speedo over read, and you will rack up more miles than you are actually doing, unless you correct it like Korn and TiN have done using a black robotics yellow box.
