I was looking through my service manual on how to change the front sprocket. It all seems rather straight forward until I read the bit in bold below

Engine Sprocket Installation
•Replace the sprocket washer and axle cotter pin.
•Install the engine sprocket onto the shaft so that the mark
side [A] faces outwards.
•Apply molybdenum disulfide oil solution to the threads of
the output shaft and the seating surface of the engine
sprocket nut.

•After torquing the engine sprocket nut, bend the one side
of the washer [B] over the nut.

What is that stuff? A quick google unsurprisingly showed it's used for lubrication. Is this step essential and can anything else (more common) be used in it's palce?

Thanks.

No its not, its grease with a graphite additive. Its a black grease basically used on CV joints etc. I wouldn't put copper grease on there.

I tend to use Copper Grease for everything too. No ill effects.

No doubt some rocket scientist will come along and prove why it's no good for this application though. Rolling Eyes Works fine por moi.

I got some of that stuff in the shed, I normally get it from the local gun shop.

Have also used copper slip with no ill effect.

If you want the "proper" stuff I've found somehere

Thing is copper slip has tiny bits of copper in and they act as a grinding paste, not a very good one but over time they may cause problems. Its ideal for things like stopping squeal on brake pads.

I'm not out Sunday unfortunately. Have fun at Cadwell. I think we need to have another SE crew track day again soon.

Copper slip prevents threads seizing from corrosion, plus how the hell can it act as a grinding paste on a non-moving surface of a output spline Rolling Eyes

Well I got some of the stuff Davo pointed out, mainly out of laziness. Just need to wait for all my bits to arrive (if Royal Mail ever sort their lives out) and get cracking.

do not jam the chain against the waterpump to get the front sprocket off. it makes a mess and you will need a new waterpump.... Embarassed

Don't use copper grease in moving applications, it's an abrasive

Use it to prevent galling

I'd use high temp lithium grease, but then I looooooooooooooove the grease

id avoid copper grease on or near the sprocket assembly, mainly due to the fact that over time it solidifies and attracts dust/rust/muck ,which in turn makes it abrasive as previously stated.Moly grease is widely available...Halfrauds will stock it along with any good motorist/car shop.good luck.tim Karma

a bit of copper grease on the thread of the spindle or the thread of the nut is not going to hurt. yes it may be slightly abrasive but the nut shouldnt be moving on the spindle anyway. no movement so no abrasive.

Moly grease I believe also has the advantage or giving a small amount of protection against shock when used on splines. Seem to remember I saw that written somewhere.
