Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the increasing amount of people on two wheels that scrape there feet along the ground as they pull away and come to a stop?

Like they will be able to use them as stabilizer's or hold the bike up if something happens in front of them.

Is it a comfort thing or am i really missing something here..

Could well be that they have upgraded from ped's as it seems to be common to need to have feet dangling all the time to keep balance on them....
Must e something to do with where there single brain cell is placed.

Personally i like to get and keep my feet on the pegs as much as poss.
Might be something to do with being a bit tight and not wanting to wear boot soles out too fast.... Laughing

I didn't think it was some sort of advanced riding technique or even a way of emergency breaking. I notice it more with peds but also with some bike riders. I was taught that feet should be on the pegs all the time unless waiting stationary and then only one should be on the floor for balance..

The only time my feet touch the floor is between 0 ~ 2mph

Maybe they just have sucky balance?

If im in traffic i cant get past, i tend to just scrape my foot as im moving so slow id be constantly lifting up and down if i didnt (like 2mph). Never do it when pulling away/coming to first stop through.

After spending all day on a bike working, I used to just let a foot drag behind when pulling away. Half laziness, half comfort of not being cramped on the pegs (long legs), half, well, I dunno.
Sure isn't a balance thing, if anything it puts you off, as you lose your support on one side.

Never taken your feet off the pegs on a long motorway stint? Stretch your legs a bit without stopping.

i sometimes keep my foot just off the floor if im quick starting from lights or out of a junction but its only til i flick up a gear.
nothing to do with balance or, especially peds coz i have never had one.

If I've been sat in traffic a while and I've decided to put both feet down, I sometimes trail my right foot behind me when I set off. I don't really think about it till I realise my foots still behind me. Kind of an unconscious thing really Wink

I wouldn't leave my left foot down though my first gear is way to short for that Razz.

I certainly do it on my scooter Very Happy . But I'm just under 5 ft and do struggle to balance (because of the weight as well as height) when I'm coming to stop. I suppose a lot of drivers behind Rolling Eyes roll their eyes when they see that I'm wobbling all over the place at the traffic lights.

Even racers trail one foot behind them alot of the time on take off.

Most pics of the amateur racing/ track days if you look a lot of people use two feet still to pull away.

Go and look at some pics.

Some people just feel more comfy doing it a certain way.

Personally I'm a lazy bastard and when pulling up to a light I bounce the bike, turn side to side to keep the bike moving so I don't have to put my feet down Laughing

Works well to Mr. Green

Personally I never do it I don't have time, my right foot is on the back brake, and by the time I've pulled away I'm shifting up to second gear so that's where my left foot is almost immediately. I don't put my left foot down at a stop until I stop, I will however occasionally straighten my legs, each in turn, on long journey just to give my knees a rest, or adjust my knee armour. But then again there are a lot of things I see other bikers do that make me wonder... Eh?

When starting and stopping it is understandable, we all do it.
((Not 100 + yards as your approach and 100 + after you have taken off))...

It does seem to be the newer riders and mped people though i have noticed.. EDIT - (not meaning anything by this)

CE

As for balance when you have got a pillion. If you get the balance right to start you should be ok. If you go to far a foot isn't going to hold or save you is it (Unless you have trees for legs or your pillion is about 4)...

i tend to leave my left foot down in traffic, not dragging along the floor though...

Must be a comfort / psychological thing, i dont wobble with it down, but if i lift it up at slower speeds when stopping and starting I do sometimes wobble.

Havent worked out how to stop smoothly either yet. i tend to put my foot down a bit early, so do a bit of a hop to a stop. Smile

Still, i will get there, only been riding a couple of weeks.

Sometimes when starting from lights and I have both feet on the ground (1st gear, clutch pulled in), I let both feet hover above the ground as I pull off, then tuck them sharpish onto the pegs when I change up to second.

In start stop traffic I do let my left foot dangle (instant side stand), but only if progress is slow.

It's not a ped thing as I have never had or even been on a ped....
