 |
|
I had an accident a while a go low speed, engine case (alternator side) cracked open and oil leaked out.
I got a new case today, put it on and tried to start the bike. Now it took a while to start and when it did it sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders. The starter motor was making a bit of a strange squeeling noise and it will not idle. It will run with the choke on and bogs down a bit if you rev it but as soon as the choke comes off it dies.
Not sure what to do. |

I had this with my Daytona 600, after changing the plugs, all was running fine, so I suggest the plugs.
Can't really help with regards the stater motor though. ____________________ TheShaggyDA: I've got 3 or 4 pairs that predate my wife, so at least 11.5 years old.

Check the plugs.
If its been over on its side, is it likely to have got oil where it shouldnt have it and fouled a plug?
good luck sorting it out ____________________ 1997 Kawasaki ER 500 A1:- Once again, Its merely crap |

not familliar on your type of bike,
i presume when the case cracked oil pissed out?
did you drain the sump and then do a full oil change? you might want to give that a thought because you don't want any nasty metal bits floating around the system.
Have you checked all the carbs to make sure they all operate full and free, no leaks or stuck valves?
Kickstart may be able to elaborate but it may be possible the bike is not firing on one cylinder because the ignition pickup has messed up. sheer speculation but its all worth a shot
its also possible the starter motor took a good knock when it hit the deck hence the squealing noise either that or mabye oil related?
hope it helps mate... good luck ____________________ A scientist crossed a skunk with an owl. He's got a bird that smells but doesn't give a hoot |

Hi
Most of the ignition system would take 2 cylinders out if damaged (and then it would be an absolute nightmare to start). If you get it running then carefully pat the exhausts from the head so you can see which are hot (be careful, easy to burn yourself) and so which cylinders are running. If a single cylinder is not firing then that counts out the pickups, cdi and coils. Could then be worth changing the plugs round and see if it moves cylinders (or see if that plug comes out hideously dirty).
How long ago did you drop it? How long has it been waiting to be fixed?
All the best

It was out of action for about 10 days. I drained all the oil and put fresh new stuff in. I will pull out the plugs tonight and have a look and report back. |

Right it's the 4th cylinder that isn't going. I have checked to see if it is sparking by taking the plug out and putting it against the frame and there is a spark however i don't know if it is weak or not.
I might try changing the ht lead. However i will try the other things mentioned on sunday when i get a chance. Thanks for all the help people
By the way when i took all the plugs out none of them were dirty at all. Thanks |

The new oil i put in now has become milky so i am going to change it. (fucking expensive ) I am also going to get new spark plugs and clean out the carbs. after that it's gonna have to go to a garage i think. I'm not sure where the coils are on my bike it seems the loom just connects on to the spark plugs so maybe the coils are in the plug holders???
Wish it would just work now |

yeah there really isn't any point in buying new ht leads and plugs. it is obviously the carb as you mentioned the fuel line being snapped. btw if the coils are built into the plug cap you should be able to tell as the cap is longer than usual caps . also if you have only just changed oil and now it is a milky colour it cant be just from standing. it is definitely got a problem, probably the head gasket but you never know the crash could have made a small fracture between the water jacket and the cylinder/crankcase which could also be a reason for it running like shite. check you're coolant level. lets hope it isn't that serious . |

that didn't fix it sometimes it sounds like for a split second its firing on all 4. i think it must be electrical.

This is getting really desperate for ideas, but on my Daytona 600, I can unplug the coils from the leads, and swap them about, worth checking stuff like that and seeing if it moves cylinder.
The other problem I've had on the Daytona 600 was water was in one of the cylinders. I used compressed air to blow the water out, and ran fine after that.
Never was too sure how the water got in there... ____________________ TheShaggyDA: I've got 3 or 4 pairs that predate my wife, so at least 11.5 years old. |
