hey how much did it cost ya for the skim as i will need mine done sometime. was it only the head that you took off and nothing else coz it sounds like something is loose or worn. i wouldn't start it again as it could be something serious just take it back apart and check everything is on properly.

Most machine shops charge around £20 - £30 for a head to be skimmed

@ Fire fox , is the noise a "clunk" or a tap or what ?

From what you have said it sounds like it could be the big end.

How much of the engine did you strip ?

Head skimmed, barrel a little skim ( very little ) top of barrel skimmed ( 20 quid ) i replaced the bearing ( piston one ) piston, rings barrel, head sorted, its like a tapping noise very loud. sounds like something could be loose but nothing is from what i can see. is there anyway to see if the main bearings are gone ?

did it sound fine before the top end rebuild? if the barrel has been bored have you put oversized rings in as the piston could be slapping. but anyway from what you describe noise to be it is more of a rattle and not a slap which could be the bearings but could be something just loose. you should really check everything is definitely on properly.

well in that case i think it must be your big end bearing as you said you have just replaced the small end bearing. does the noise get louder or quieter when you rev it. normally with big end bearings the noise doesn't go away when revving engine whereas small end bearings normally do. i would definitely check big end bearing. when jamie said check side to side movement i think he might have meant side to side angular movement as when the bearing wears there is more free play between the two surfaces.

yep sounds like the big end bearing to me. happened to me 3weeks ago. had a little ticking noise for ages that got louder very very quickly, untill the engine just was too loud to run, this is with 2headphones in and music up to volume limit. then i had extreme engine braking when coming off the throttle. so i took the head off, barrel off and piston off and had a feel of the conrod and sure enough there was loads of angular side to side movement. so i just bought a second hand 9,oookm engine, just waiting for it to arrive should be here friday Praying then we'll see how it goes.
but yea, i personally think you big end bearing has had it.

are you sure the noise just goes, and isnt masked by the noise of the engine as you accellerate?

Get a long screwdriver and put your ear on the handle end , then put the "pointy" end on the barrel and have a listen to see if it's still there when you rev the bike..

Thumbs Up

Might be your rings not quite the right size for the barrel? Need to hear it. I can't see it being the big end unless someone has let some crap in there.

As daft as it sounds.........is it possible you have left a nut or bolt loose to rattle round in there when taking it apart/putting it back together?

my advise, as my grandad told me, if you hear a strange noise turn the music up(ipod in my case) and carry on. if the bike stops running then come to me.

basically dont worrie about the noise, but then when or even IF a problem arrises... start to worrie LOL.

should be fine, just put your mind at ease and take the barrel off, check the conrod for excessive play, then recheck the work you've done already. you'l probably find its something stupid and worried for nothing.

That's not good, it'd like hiding a fault.

It'll get worse and bite you in the ass when you least expect it to.

Get to the source of the issue now Imo.
