The age old adjust and lube the chain has turned into a disaster!

It didnt start well, the axel bolts were stupidly tight, done by the monkeys at regent no doubt and not at the correct torque setting.

So i kept plodding on, and eventually heard a crack, and then it loosened off pretty much normally. So i got the chain adjusted all good. Started to tighten it up its not tightening, take the bolt off and fine a shard of metal, on the bolt.

Now basically have i shagged the bolt or have i completely trashed my spindle?

If you`re talking about the wheel spindle itself, then I suggest you replace it, together with the nut

It shouldn`t cost too much - If you know your local bikeshop at all, I`m sure they`d be able to sort you with a spindle from a similar bike

The trick is to grease the new spindle so that this doesn`t happen to ya again

Well it depends on if you shreded the thread on the bolt or the spindle.

Is the metal "shard" like a short peice of ribbon?

Prob just stripped the thread

Check the bolt, is any of the thread missing:
If it is, it is the bolt that has stripped and all you need is a new bolt
If it isnt, the bit it screwed into has had the thread stripped.

Dependant on the tollerances on the part you can re-drill and re-tap the thread bigger then buy a bigger bolt to fit. Or just buy a new bit.

I had a similar fuck up, took my suspension off, getting it back on was a lot harder, I got the bolt somewhat in, hit it with a hammer for ages and tried to get it all the way in with no success. I was bending the metal plates at the bottom because i didn't line the bolt up properly.

I looked where the bolt screwed in and the thread was completely fucked. I couldn't replace it either because the nut was wielded into the suspension piece.

What I had to do was simply use a smaller bolt & a nut. Just whacked it through, tightened it as hard as I could. I think it's strong enough to support the weight. =]

Took it off and basically found out that the bolt has no thread, the spindle thread looks fine.

I think a mechanic has done a shoddy shitty job, and helicoiled the fucker or something and no told me.

You are seriously retarded. I'd like to think you're a clever forum troll but unfortunately I don't think you are. Do what ZRX61 says before you kill yourself. Although you killing yourself through your own stupidity is only natural selection at work I suppose.

The last post I made where I showed that I didn't fully understand something, you ripped on me too. I know a lot about computers that you will never understand but I wouldn't take the piss out of you. I'm learning. And you don't understand Razz I tried to screw it in for a very long time, trying to line it up, but it wasn't working so I tried hammering it through while I held it in place, but I couldn't get it to go through. So I resorted to the only thing I could think of to get my bike working again without buying a new rear suspension.

My bike weighs 87kg dry, I weigh 11 stone.

The bolt is quite secure I must say. You havn't seen it so you cannot comment.

It's just a few mm smaller than the previous one so it's still thick and strong. It holds my weight as it did before. It's the same thing basically just a fraction smaller bolt.

They are made a certain size for a reason, doesn't matter on the weight of the bike or you, its still going to hurt alot if it fails. Get it repaired properly before you become a statistic.

Yup, just go and buy a new bolt. If you dont know what size it is just take it into a car / bike shop and ask for a non broken one while handing the broken one over.

In my experiance it does tend to be the bolt that strips and not the nut, no idea why. (tool maker, never worked on a bike)

When you get the new bolt try it in, but dont force it if it is tight straight away, there is a chance it could have damaged the thread in the spindle(??). If it feels overly tight when screwing it in go to a local friendly garage and ask if they can run a tap through the spindle for you just to clear the thread. 30 second job with the correct tools. Unlikely it has damaged it, but dont break another bolt forcing it. Smile

Ok numbnuts tell me how much force is transmitted through the bolt when you hit a pothole at 70mph?

U cant normally see the damage, as it can just slightly pull a bit of the thread up. Looks fine, but it is super tight screwing it in. All the tap does is re-align the thread, as well as remove any rough edges if there are any Smile

Good luck. Thumbs Up

Fifteen in one night springs immediately to mind.

That would be the night the new London ambulance service computer system went live. 999 calls scrolled off the top of the screen and there was no way of getting them back again.

Does,nt matter how tight its is theres still going to be movement similar to a worn bush and it will fail at some point. Rolling Eyes

Oh right, yeah that'd be really expensive

You should just bodge the repair with a cheap part, I'm sure it'll be fine, but I don't care if you die, it's not my body!

It's all I could think of to repair it as it was. I think it will hold until I can afford a new suspension. I cannot afford it yet but I need a ride. if I die it's my fault so don't worry about it. I know it will be fine though

Well numbnuts, I'm not stupid enough to drive over potholes and my bike manages 60 maximum.

here's few pics of the bolt and nut. I think it will be safe until i get a new bike, either 125cc or -33bhp (very soon) =]

Back on topic,

Me and a mate replaced the chain and sprockets on my XR125 last night, didnt break anything taking it off. But when torquing up the front sprocket nuts one of them snapped the head off. Luckily i had a couple kicking around.

Must say now i've ridden it about abit its so much smoother when pulling away in first, i think the old chain and sprockets were so worn that the sprocket jumped a couple of teeth while pulling away.

Hope u get urs fixed Thumbs Up

*Edit*

Thanks to ggg__ for actually trying to help in the chat room last night angle grinder worked lovely. Thumbs Up
