anyway the gs500 that i bought the other day big end is gone ,
Will be getting back from the mechanic today in bits as i never accepted his quote,
What would the procedure be if i want to try repair / rebuild the motor myself and what would/should i replace or would you suggest that i not even bother and just get another motor to fit in the frame ( xt500 could be funny Laughing )
Sorry for the long link

Hi

Depends who screwed the crank is.

If you are really lucky then just new big end shells would fix it. Chances are that if the noise is as bad as you suggest then it would be a very tempory fix.

A decent engineers could likely repair the crank so that with new shells it would be OK.

I would also be a touch concerned as to why the crank is wrecked. Easiest way to do it would be to run out of oil, which would also likely damage other engine parts (eg, the cams bearings).

In the UK GS500s are pretty common and a 2nd hand engine would be (by far) the cheapest solution.

All the best

Keith

Hi thanks for the quick response , what i will do once i get it back i will take photos as i have not seen t myself yet. I also think this guy is an idiot as first it was the crank and now its the bigend .
But i will see when i get it , the reason i said an xt motor is i think i saw one for R1500 the other day which is not to bad.
Mark i would love to but i would never afford the shipping as i am in southafrica.

Thanks
Angus

People tend to use the 2 terms interchangably when referring to a knackered big end. Often the worn big end bearing will damage the crank as well.

All the best

ah that would explain it then . but some else told me if it was the crank the bike would never start, also we started it when he fetched it and he thought it sounded like a head gasket.
so i wonder about this ?
Rolling Eyes
i also think he doesnt like working on bike that are not new and sold thru him as when i was looking at buying a second/bigger bike
he was very flat , like no recommendations.
but every one in sa has a choice buy a new bike for 60 000 .+ for like an r1
or find a secondhand bike for 5 to 60 000 . depending on what you get and as i am only like 22 i dont have 60 000. for the r1 . and banks wont finance me because of age etc ,edit sorry this is a bit of a rant.
Anyway worst case scenario , i would have to replace crankshaft ,
bearings pistons etc. i am actually trying to build a list of spares to start getting prices and see what i will actually do

Thanks

2nd hand engine would be easiest option.
Mechanics do not like to work on dog shite equipment.
He may have high professional standards but felt it imploite to enlighten you.
To repair this damage is always expensive due to time spent. Grind and polish and new parts would possibly be less than labour.

Ask him how much for him to stick another engine in it.
Be careful about falling out with him just yet. He may save your life one day. Laughing

Depends how badly it has gone. I had the big ends pack up on a car. It still ran fine but had a slight noise you could provoke at certain rpm. Being a cheap car I just landed up replacing the big end shells and got away with it. Pretty certain if I had left it a few weeks it would have killed it totally.

A lot do not like working on older bikes as they know that with the cost of parts and labour it is likely not to be finacially viable. Hence if they do the work and charge the real rate they get slagged off for being expensive, yet if they charge less then they land up making little money or a loss.

All the best

yeah thanks for this .
i get the feeling even if i had to find a second hand engine he would not want to fit it in but maybe i am wrong . These are the same guys who did work on my spokes and never tightened the back wheel properly on my 125cc , but i guess we are all entitled to one mistake each and maybe mine was buying the bike ( gs500 )
but honestly nd i know this is gonna attract controversy
how could someone sell a bike and managed to disguise bigend that are gone and then still have the balls to ride some 60+ km to show me the bike , surely that is risky.
and believe me i would never bought the bike if there was any abnormal noise from the engine when i first saw it .

The bike is now back in my garage in bits, here are some pics, which you can see the damaged piston caused by the broken/missing big end bearing.. So i plan to replace the pistons and crankshaft, and conrods and seals and bearings etc
