paivi wins the prize there! its my final year project and im just getting a head start. my friend is doing another bike related project so we thought we'd try posting here together.

some answers to your comments,

1. yes i will design it to give as much freedom of movement as possible.
2. yes i ride a bike so i know what im talking about. i ride a cbr 600f
3. i am not looking for this to be made legislation, only looking to provide us vulnerable bikers with some much needed protection.
4.i decided to do this project after sustaining a nasty neck injusy in an accident a few years back.

hope this answers a few questions.

Don't worry, that's just our Jamie...

You might want to contact NABD, as they know a thing or two about biking injuries, and might give you more insightful replies, especially for follow-up.

Also, try the Ducati Sporting Club, as some of the guys there are involved in Desmo Due racing, and unfortunately have had some bad accidents, so again, might be able to provide more input.

Alpinestars are developing a neck brace with the help of some GP riders. Apparently they have been doing so for a number of years, but have had a lot of problems making it work. The A'star guy i saw interviewed on Eurosport during one of the behind the scenes type bits, said that they will be on the market in a year.

i have done some research already, this isnt the first, so im prety clued up about neck braces. my idea is to combine helmet and neck brace and condense the size considerably. ill keep you posted to how its going

BMW and KTM also have systems.

TBF most of them bar the Dainese one which looks like it may snap your head off look huge and restrict your vision because you have to twist your whole body as oppose to just your neck like you would when doing a lifesaver. Only seem really viable for off-roading.

so, here are some of my findings so far, based on 34 surveys.

58.8% of you are not interested in neckbraces
20.6% are looking to buy one
20.6% are either unaware they exist or would like to be convinced before they made a decision.

from this, its clear that there is definately something wrong with current designs. they are not appealing to most of us. whether this is due to them being geared towards racing rather than road use, or just lack of marketing i don't know yet.


29.4% have sustained a neck injury after of during a crash
38.2% have not
32.4% have not crashed

29.4% is more than substantial to merit research into neck brace advancements, however the fact that less people injure their necks than don't injure them, and less again injure them badly, means that a condensed, less full scale neck brace could both help and be satisfactory to the average biker.


a whopping 85% of you would buy one either because you would feel safer, if they werent too expensive or if they didn't restrict your movement.


again thanks for all the aditional comments, they are all realy helpful, and keep them coming! with every link posted i can learn more, and will ultimately arrive at a better solution.

Im all for protection but at £230 it would make me walk the other way and keep using with what ive all ready got im afraid.

Cost is a major factor especially when your spending up to £500 on a Helmet alone. Plus Life savers (i would imagine) would be harder and more restricted with any type of neck brace on.

Design and how comfy it would be would matter on the roads but not as much for track use. Cost wouldn't matter so much for track as chances are you are going to come off at greater speeds.
