Hi folks,

My Halfords Pro socket set came with an "adapter" that resembled 5cm long 5mm wide hex bar. It would go into the chuck of any ordinary drill and allow you to put a 1/4" socket or socket extension bar onto the drill, thereby allowing me to use a drill to undo/redo light bolts.

Naturally enough this little adapter has gone AWOL.

I've searched high and low but I don't know what the thing is called or where to get one, any suggestions? It was bloody usefull!

I'm sure tooled-up.com have it but I can't figure out what to search for...

Thanks!

Something like this.

https://www.whdirect.co.uk does them for a quid I think - but postage isn't so great unless you order loads of stuff.

Think screwfix do too, but can't find them, if not machine mart should.

Definitely very useful Thumbs Up.

Bodge I know, but if its a 5cm long 5mm hex piece, why not saw a 5cm bit off a 5mm allen key?

Because he wants it to have a 1/4" square end, not a 5mm hex end?

For the record, the size of the Hex-bit is actually 1/4" - so the screw driver bits will fit in a 1/4" socket if you want to adapt the other way.
That comes in at 6.35mm I believe.

Doh, thanks for the help folks. Unfortunately I ordered it from some website prior to seeing that one on eBay, where a 1/4" and 3/8" one came to £6.

Not that the electric drill has the power for 1/2" sockets anyway.

If anybody doesn't have one of these bits, it's highly recommended. Makes things so much quicker and more convenient.

My (£25, 24V) electric drill does big sockets fine - still tightens them fairly tight but I'll generally start/finish it by hand anyway to be sure.
