I've got some on the SV, purely to keep the shock cool as it runs right next to the exhaust. It's pretty effective, but not sure what it's *designed* for. Seems a bit like go faster stripes to me.

Its good for disguising downpipes that are paper thin and starting to hole.

Isn't it supposed to maintain an even temperature through the pipes, which benefits the motor's operation? Think I read that somewhere.

Basically what you said.

It helps keep the heat in the exhaust which is supposed to be "good for the back pressure" and it helps keep the bike much cooler since the heat is kept more with in the exhaust. Also helps with over heating as such that it directs it into the pipe.

Supposed to help with exhaust temps which is all a bit strange as cool air takes up less space than hot.

Best used in cars to stop bu;kheads getting hot.

Retains water and helps your exhausts rot.

Cold air is more dense and will not flow as easily. I cant see the wrap making much of a difference at manifold temps mind.

I think you should rethink that one.

How so? You only need to cool it when trying to compress it into a vessel (ie induction) rather than just shoving it out of an open ended exhaust pipe.

Cooler air is more dense flows less easily, but intercooling in forced indution is beneficial as the compressor has relatively far more force and can shove it in the cylinder.

Put your engine oil in the freezer and try and and pour it.

The colder the air the denser it is the less area it takes up meaning a given amount of exhaust gas if denser will go through the exhaust quicker for the same given velocity as a less dense charge.

The quicker you can exit exhaust gas from the system the less restrictive it is. This is why Honda started using water injection in exhaust systems on the NSR500 to cool the exiting charge..
