ok so one day I went out on my bike to the cinema when I got out back to my bike there was a big puddle underneath the pide...petrol. uh oh.

at the time I looked around trying to find the leak and decided that it was the bike that was there before me that was leaking. but i was wrong the carb was flooding and the petrol was coming out of the overflow.

so the next day I took the carb apart and decided that the the float valve was sticking open.

so I took it apart and managed to make the valve stick closed. ooops.

so anyway i have fixed that now and the float valve seems to be working.

but the bike wont start unless the choke is fully closed and it dies when you open the choke.

It revs ok when the choke is closed but it just doesn't seem right and it will be running to rich.

any ideas what has gone wrong?

possibly fuel starvation?

ahhhh I'm really geting annoyed now.

not enough air to the engine, check that the filter and air box isnt blocked and the filter is clean, that should stop it running rich.

if the worst comes to the worst then strip down the slides in the carbs and lower the needles a notch each, this will lean off the mixture a bit.

Cheers
John

Did you check the float hight? if it is wrong it could cause the bike to run rich.

I dont think it is air because when i open the choke to let more air in it dies.

I'm not sure how i check the float height?

Have you got a manual?
Basically you take off the float bowls and measure the float hight,(Usually with the carb upside down) all the measurements and exactly how to do it will be in the manual.

Have a look here for your bikes manual if you don't have one

ok, just re read it and it sounds as though its running too lean, either way, check the floats are working and set propperly, all jets are clear and that there are no air leaks anywere between the airbox snorkel and the engine. then if needs must adjust the mixture by raising or lowering the needle height.

Hope this helps
John

Lean , Rich Why would it change because the float was sticking?

Sounds like a simple case of something hasn't been put back together properly. As long as you have fixed the sticking float valve and put everything as you found it, it should run exactly like it did before the fuel leak.

I would strip it down and re assemble it carefully. Wink

right,

I have now taken the carb off and dismantled it 7 times and every time I put it back how it should be it still did the same thing.

so feeling I had hit a wall with this problem I have just taken it down to a local bike shop who should hopefully have it going by tomorrow.

the guy reconned it was something to do with exhaust manifold or some bullsh!t like that so I find that hard to belive. but anyway if they fix it I dont care. I also took the opportunity to get the bike sorted out a bit, as the engine has allways sounded a bit rough. amongst other things.

so if its done tomorrow I will post an update to let you know the result.

thanks for all the advice guys.

well i am a twat

the garage took it checked it allover adjusted valve clearences cleaned the carb and some other bits and discovered that I had put the bloody float on upside down. durghhh I'm ashamed of myself.

allthough it still worked with it upside down it wasn't letting in the 'right' amont of fuel.

but in the end they decided that it was the valve clearences that was the problem.

so SORTED! ! ! !

will be going down to brighton on it on sunday.
