Typhoons have already come face to face with them, it's been going on for a few weeks now.

The Iraq and Afganistan war isnt our war, its Bush's war.

Thats very true, but doesn't alter the fact that we have large numbers of troops there.

Yep, which are thankfully now starting to come back.

I do know what your getting at though, my step brother is in the Marines, and brother is in the Navy so the whole Iraq thing is very real to me.

They've been doing that for years.

Anyway, crap intercept. It's not a proper 'Bear Hunt' unless the intercepting aircraft is inside the Bears wingspan. Preferrably close enough to write obscene notes to the rear observer in the bear and hold them against the cockpit canopy.
These are intercepts:
"Come about to bearing 090 and leave our airspace or you will be fired upon."

Quote:
Scrambling to intercept Russian strategic bombers approaching UK airspace is becoming an expensive business for the RAF. It costs more than £40,000 an hour for a Tornado F3 to take to the skies. Today's operation to shadow the eight Russian Bears will have cost at least £161,000.

Oh ffs, why did they have to put this in? It's only a matter of time before some Guardian-reader pops up and has a moan about how that money would be better spent on improving multi-cultural relations or some other load of bs.

Question:
What would happen if those Bears had entered British air space? Would we have shot them down? Would They Have been bearing nuclear weapons?

Suppose it couldn't be as bad as the B-52 which flew over America with 5 live nukes under its wings Rolling Eyes

Yes and no. They used to intercept them with BAC Lightnings. They only carried two sidewinders but the pilots used to reckon that the 260 rounds of 30mm aden gun ammo they used to carry would be more than sufficient to take a Bear down given that they pretty much can't miss at those sort of ranges.

They would have been able to pretty much pick-off the crew one at a time if they wanted to.

There is a good story about those intercepts. The Soviets were pissed off when pictures were published of Bear crews waving to the crews of the interceptors. It was considered too close to fraternising with the enemy. They started to putting a KGB political officer on board each aircraft whos job it was to stop the crew waving and posing for photographs when they were intercepted.

There is a 20 metre long crawlway between the main cabin and the tail observation window on a bear. The lightning crews would pull alongside the tail section and wave at the crew until the KGB man came and made them stop. The lightning would then pull forwards and wave at the pilot. The aim of the game was to see how many times you could make the KGB officer crawl along the tunnel before he got fed up with it.

There is also a great story about a Lightning that intercepted an American U2 spyplane, The U2 hadn't got permission to overfly, they never asked because they thought they were too high for anyone to get near anyway.

Not to be outdone the RAF scrambled a lightning and the pilot managed to balance it vertically on its tail and used the thrust to shove it an extra 15k feet above the point where he'd lost all lift from the wings. He managed to hold it there just long enough to light up the U2 with his missiles before performing the mother of all stall-turns.

That sounds like some interesting stuff there stinkwheel. You got a link or something that I can read up on this kind of thing?

Another Question:
Realistically, WHY are the Russians doing this? Show of strength? Flexing its muscles in front of the international media?

I remember reading about a similar design which was used as a passenger plane. It had a tendency for the propellors to fly off and smash into the fuselage now and then. So they put the wardrobes in the bit that they always hit, so no passengers would be injured.

I love the Russian design ethic. Cool

Most of those stories were picked up off RAF personell when I was in the cadets. A great deal of pissing about went on (and presumably still does).

They're testing our response times in flying the Bears over, then they can feed them into their wargames computers. During the height of the cold war, a soviet aircraft would be intercepted within 30 minutes of entering UK airspace from any airbase in the UK. Lightnings were REALLY fucking fast.

Awesome - Lightnings are the coolest plane ever made.

As a minor quibble, I don't think they ever carried Sidewinder - we didn't get our paws on this until around the Falklands war - they carried 'Red Top' missiles, no relation to full fat milk, I'm sure!

Not bad considering that the far more modern Tornado and Typhoon have official service ceilings of around 50k and 65k feet respectively!

Except for one slight prob.....
Lightnings used to intercept Akrotiri U2's all the time.....& fly level with them...the "unofficial" ceiling for a Lightning was about 86,000ft....

Yeah. So Bear enters UK airspace over Shetland. Lightning scrambles from the South of england and is there within 30 minutes. That time is from the pilot being told he has to go to him being there.

Obviously they would have scrambled an aircraft from Lossiemouth for a Bear coming in over Shetland which would be there a good deal quicker.

Another fairly off-topic aircraft story I heard was of a servciceman based in Larbruch in Germany. His parents were involved in a serious car crash and were dying in Glasgow General. The RAF got him to their bedside in 45 minutes via the back seat of a phantom F4.

Also very fast. From memory something like 600mph, which is pretty impressive for a prop driven aircraft.

All the best

Aye. Twin, counter rotating airscrews on each engine. The fact that you can fly along next to one in a phantom is testament to their speed.
