Okay, somebody please help.
My NC30 starts up fine when it is cold, however whenever it is warm it just wont start. It appears to be that the battery isnt providing quite enough power, however it is fine when the bike is cold.
Before I shell out for any new parts (which may not be the problem) can anybody shed some light on what the problem could be.
It gets rather embarrasing when I pull up at the petrol station, fill up go and pay then have to bump start the bike to get her going again. Embarassed

(I have no problems bump starting btw, just normal starting using the start button) Confused

I have had a couple of suggestions which point towards either the starter motor (sounds normal) or maybe regulator/rectifier (as the lights tend to dim when the engine is revved). I think I will need to get busy with the multimeter, unless someone here has a clue.

Not a solution m8, but to save the embarassing petrol station moments, get another key cut and leave the bike running, bang it on its stand, fill her up, pay and bob's your uncle. This is fine till somebody nicks your bike....but hey.

Hi

Does the bike turn over and just not start? If so I would suspect you are suffering from fuel vapourisation, which can happen easily on a compact engine like a V4. Basically the carb is warmed up by the engine and the fuel evaporates, so when you try and start it the mixture is really rich. To get round this try using full throttle when you start it, and be prepared to back off quickly. If this is the problem then there is probably a missing heat shield on your bike)

The other possible suggestion is that the bike is flooding while parked, normally caused by wear in the needle valve or wrongly set carb float heights. Petrol will flow into the engine, and is basically uncompressable so the starter cannot turn the engine over. However, it would also be difficult to bump start the bike. From cold the petrol would have evaporated, but no more would have come through as you will have a vacuum operated fuel tap.

All the best

Keith

Hi

You ever tried finding an idiots guide to bikes. We spent ages trying to find one for a friend. Zero mechanical knowledge, but willing to learn

Nah, she knows how to ride a bike, but wants some idea of what happens inside the engine beyond "mister petrol meets misses spark and off they go with a bang"

We eventually found a 20 year old book at a bike show which wasnt bad.

All the best
