400 or ex 400 owners

do you miss them? or glad to move on? is it a stage of biking that should be embraced perhaps?

part of me is contemplating whether to get another 400 as i never had much chance to really get the most out of mine before it was squashed. As its looking like becoming a bit of a pain to get it road worthy again. im thinking i could get another and use my crashed one as spares, but to me it appears theres less and less of decent ones about now of whichever ones. So do i immediately stop faffing about with the 400s, break mine and just jump straight to a 600?...

I like mine its small,nippy and a hoot to ride, but I'm sure I'd also enjoy a 600 as well.
Mine was just for sale at the right price, at the right time in the right place. Not sure if I'd go out of my way to buy one though as they don't really offer anything a 600 can't offer with a bit more power, comfort and reliability.

Saying that I don't feel any need to sell mine to get a 600 so i suppose if you find a decent one and your not to power hungry then go for it.

Hey m8!

If you're remotely can't be arsed get a 600! they are newer, in better nick (Suspension on many 400's is well past it's best), cheaper, easy to find parts and accessories for and they're quicker . Sure you know all that though

Looking back I guess the 400 for me was a self defence mechanism... Something not as likely to kill me because I'm young and stupid. But now I've got that experience I feel more ready to move on. You've got some great experience on that GS now though so you're more than capable of not going crazy when you jump on a 600.

I think a part of me will miss the NC30 as it was my first bike love I suppose... It's lots of fun and does seem to be good to ride! But I'm still quite a novice (Never got my knee down, although I've never tried) and I don't think I've ever come close to taking true advantage of the bikes so called superb handling.

Good luck with your decision... And whatever you choose to do hurry up! There is still plenty of good biking opportunities to be had before Winter kicks in!

400's are great if your budget is less than 2 grand, but a modern 600 will outhandle, outbrake and outrun them.

Different bikes suit different people at different times in their lives, if your obsessed with having the best in everything then they are not the best bet but as to pride of ownership and pure grin factor they are hard to beat!

I had one, and I feel it taught me many lessons in my first year of riding.

If you can afford two bikes, why not buy a cheap ish hack to get around on CB500 etc. and then you sort your 400 as and when it suits you.

a while ago now i changed from a 400 - 600 and tbh i missed my 400 like crazy.

it was fast enough and great fun on my own but was a bit pants 2 up, anyway i changed to a 600 and now am perfectly comfy with that although i do look back and think how much fun the 4 was.

400's seem to hold a better price than a 600, i got my newer zx6 for what i paid for the 400 (which was 4 years older). so it might be worth going for a 600.

I miss my vfr 400 with a passion. Thought it was such a great bike to hack around on, but then i have moved from a vfr to a bandit 600 .

I love my ZXR, quick enough for the road and has great handling.
Although i would like to be able to cruise at around 80-90 without the revs being so high.

Oh dear. In hindsight I enjoyed washing and perving over my Gixxer 400 RKSP more than riding it. Nice thing to own but fucking useless for anything other than going crazy on. As a bike the 750's extra grunt and weight combined with plush suspension make it a far more useful device.

Funnily enough i traded in my cb1 400 for a speed 4 today - i really enjoyed the 400, but it was getting on a bit, the suspension was well past its best and i found longer journeys tiresome.
I noticed on the triumph on the way home that it took a bit more effort to turn it, but it was nice having double the power

Still got mine, fully intend keeping it for the forseeable despite the new bike being bigger, faster, more comfortable etc.

had mine for about 3 years now, in that time iv been a bike mechanic so obv ridden most the big bikes old an new, and for the money i would have nothing else.... use mine every day, took me across europe, does the odd trackday. without fault.

gotta love the power of a well tuned 400 at such a light weight they can really move too, theres a fzr400 on ebay that claims 80bhp, 80bhp is stock for a fzr 600, so imagine that i love my 400 even tho it was in a shit state to say the least, but i've cleaned it up and its holdin in there, i'd suggest a 400 to anyone, i love em, want one of each

hmm... some interesting replys there guys. Im really split between getting another 400 or to move up to a 600 now.

As much as I loved my 400, and think they still tick all the right boxes to me in performance, cost etc, I also feel like perhaps they've had their day now, many are really old now.

but theres not really any 600's that take my fancy, i'd still pine over a decent nc30 (if i can still find one) than a CBR if you get what i mean?

might have to go have a peruse around local bike shops this weekend, got to remember to leave my purse at home though...
