Clunky Gearchange 1st - 2nd

Hi all!

My ZX6R 2003 (19000 miles) has developed a somewhat clunky change from 1st into 2nd, any idea what this could be? it use to be almost silent in comparison, could it be clutch cable tension? (clutching at straws here, no pun intended)

Thaks for the replies guys, it seems Mudskipper was spot on, the chain is slacker than an alcoholic student in a room full of job papers.

no idea how i`ve let it get so bad, probably checked it two weeks ago. Chain and sprockets are only a couple of thousand miles old too, nevermind its my own fault for missing it.

Ok, its not the chain, its perfectly adjusted now and still changing up into 2nd feels like the clunk from neutral to 1st.

Could it be anything to do with the clutch cable, do they need adjusting ever?

Please explain to me as you would a child.

Might sound daft, but my 7r is always the same when it needs a service. Just had mine serviced and 'box is like a new one again.

Try an oil change before exploring further. If it don't cure it you've not really lost out

Went to a garage today and they suggested that the Gear Lever had too much play, and i would need a new one. Any thoughts?

I think your best bet would be to find another ZX6R of similar age and mileage to compare it to (not V easy I know). Fours can have noisy gearchanges, esp low down. It could be just getting a bit noisier with age. As long as you can select gears ok and theres no oil dripping from the gearbox, I wouldn't be too worried at this stage.

My NC29 had a clunky 1st to 2nd change. 20k kilometers. As long as the chain is adjusted right, and there is oil in it, I don't let it bother me. It doesn't jump out of gear or anything, So as far as im concerned its ok.

My bandit sometimes runs smooth from 1st to 2nd but somedays it will clunk, and quite loud at that too - some people asked 'is that normal'

Ive been told it is, just finding the 1st gear.

Still runs fine ect.

only passing info on what the plausable cause is, why? do you know the problem and whats causing it? have you stripped the bike? worn dogs make for noisey changes, i've read it 100s of times, its only info, am not saying that is the 100% sure thats the problem. all i know is when the gearbox is done over winter in mine my bike will be complete, all done by me, so for knowing jack i've done quite well

1st to second is often clunky

frsh oil and a well adjusted chain lessen it, but it will worsen with wear as the engine tots up miles.

Check the clutch cable is adjusted properly as a slightly draggin clutch will make things worse.
