Ever had a splitlink fail?

Specifically a chain failure at a splitlink WHEN YOU WOULD NOT HAVE EXPECTED IT.

DO include ones where you've noticed the keeper plate has come off before it totally failed,

DO NOT Include ones you know full well were fucked but didn't bother replacing.

Never had a split link chain hence why I haven't voted.

Had 3 2 1 chain fail 'unexpectedly'; wasn't at the split link. Realised the other two cases were with a knackered chain.

If I'm not mistaken drag racers tend to use them?

IF they are kept clean and are fitted properly then they should be fine.. personally I'd araldite it too for good measure

Another thing is if you can remove it you can clean it far easier, and thoroughly, so you could end up with a safer chain?

only ever used soft links, so i cant really comment, but i would really only prefer to use a soft link cos of the post your refering to.
easier to fit too imo

Never had one fail and I have done 100,s of 1000,s of miles if not over
a million+.But the last one I replaced for one of the lads the clip fell off but
the chain did not break some how.I did have to force the outer part of the
like on when I was replacing the chain so I guess it was just stuck there.

I wonder if the size of the chain has anything to do with it? The GPZ makes a reasonable amount of power but only has a 520 chain. Always struck me as a bit thin to be honest

I voted" no never had one" and i dont think i ever will,get the job done properly and forget its there,split links are not safe and i will never have one on any bike i own.

Yes there is that (probably only use them for 2/3 runs so it'd be more down to practicality I'd have thought), but it pisses all over the "you can't use a split link because there not for modern high power bikes" argument that usually comes up..

I'm not really a chain drive kind of guy (permission to enter shafty smug mode?) but mr_fisty does allot more miles than me per and afaik still uses them (at least he used them for a number of years and is still alive)

(btw i read the link after writeing "duuh i thiiiink drag racers use em" but ive hered it a few times before)

Only ever seen Triple s chains fail at the spring link and I've seen a fair few do it.

why inst there an option for those of us who have had split links that have never failed?

I've got a fucked split link on my off roader and it still hasn't failed

Only ever suffered one broken chain and it wasn't a split-link type. It was a soft-link but it didn't fail at the joining-link.

The chain on my zx6r is a 520, it looks like a push-bike chain but apparently they cant take anything bigger

Yeah, had a 525 chain with split-link fail at 65mph on the M5, I blame the mechanic who serviced my bike 3 days earlier, but meh what you gonna do about it?

I've had a chain snap at the split link - Piccy

The chain stayed on though, so no major disaster.

The broken side-plate on that split-link has nothing to do with the securing method. It would have broken were it a split or a rivet link. It's just a poor-quality link. Could be that the chain manufacturer has used a different supplier for the links than the rolls of chain they cut-up and sell as kits but that again isn't the fault of the link design.


Mostly it's a psychological thing - people look at the split-link and can't see how the little clip can cope with all those forces. Of course it doesn't have to.
