97 ER5 A1 "output shaft" oil leak

Hiya,

My Er has developed a SLIGHT drip from the area of the front sprocket. Its engine oil for certain (as opposed to an overlubed chain) as there is no spray from the chain elsewhere, and I will only get a tiny drip when parked up (by that I mean the spot is about 2-3mm across).

How do I go about sorting this leak out? Is it a case of chain/sprocket off then remove a push in seal, clean seat and replace with new? If so does anyone have any idea how much it would cost at a dealership?


Failing that, is it something I could do myself without ballsing up too badly? Ive got a good socket set but no access to an airline for impact wrenches (which I would be loathe to use anyhow as I dont think that bearings would take too kindly to it) I also have a basic mechanical knowledge.

Mine does the same except its the gear change shaft. I'd leave it a long as its not to bad.

As long as its a externally replaceable seal then yes its not a hard job... remove the sprocket, dig the oil seal out taking care not to mark the inner shaft, clean it all up... then refit the new seal. Try to find something that can be put over the shaft to tap the seal in.

Another tip is to cover the splines on the gearbox shaft with insulation tape while you are refitting the seal to prevent the seals lip getting damaged as some times the edges of the splines can be razor sharp!

It's just a bitch of a job. I think the output seal is lipped so it's a split the crank case job.
