Im going to look at a 03 nsr tomorrow. Its got an unrestricted CDI, but still has the intake and exhaust restriction(need this for insurance). Ive talked to the guy and he says neither the piston or rings have been changed and theres 15,600 miles on it. He`s says fairings are perfect and is asking €1,800. Ive owened an NSR before so i have a good idea about the bike. Just wondering would there be long term damage due to lack of ring changes? Does it sound like a good deal?

thanks

well, tbh with you, you need the help of alians(i think thats how its spelt) hes the nsr master of this forum.

Edit, PM alains, he'll know what to do.
i think that the miles on it is quite low, i dont think you need them replaced just yet, but like i said pm alains for a better idea.

Make sure you ask the seller how the bike engine was run in. and also find out what oil it has been running on.

I got around 25K miles on my bike before i decided to do a ring change and even then it didn't need it doing.

Have a look at the gearbox oil level and see the colour of the oil.. that can also indicate what sort of care the bike has been under. other than that just listen to the motor, any whirring then suspect slightly worn bearings... also listen to the PowerValve motor, if its struggling or clicking suspect the exhaust manifold will be gunked up with carbon Thumbs Up

Get hold of a copy of the workshop manual and look at the service intervals for a ring change (I did have a copy on another hard drive but I have misplaced it) If you find that its past that, then you have some good leverage to get the price down as who knows when they could fail.

Do a search on here as I know Alains has answered this before, mine went just under 7500 which I think is when you should change the rings ( If memory serves )...

15000 miles is a lot , my cotation company says 2100€ which is £1400 . so if the cosmetics are immaculate, tyres 50% used and chain+sprockets OK you can offer £1500 but not more

If the bike is still running at 12bhp and always has done, and it's been well looked after and run on expensive fully synthetic oil too, then i don't see it being a problem.

Is there any way you can do a compression test when you go to look at it? That would confirm if the engine still has good compression and confirm that it does'nt need engine work in th near future?

A de-restricted 26bhp NSR will wear a piston and ring set at the very least twice as quickly as it would in restricted form. This is due to the fact that it runs hotter and revs much higher in full power trim. I'd still do a compression check if you can, and look at the general state of the bike for clues to as how it's been looked after. If the engine runs well and ticks over smoothly without any rattles or knocks then id be happy that it's healthy.

You can normally tell by the sound of the engine and how easy it is to start and how it runs from cold and ticks over, if it's worn to the point of needing an overhaul.

I'd still do a ring change with that mileage on a 2 stroke. Leave it and you'll be replacing the barrel aswell.

Although not accurate i find simply removing the spark plug, putting bike in gear, and walking with bike whilst holding my thumb over cylinder(spark plug hole) gives enough indication. Does with me anyway, i know when it's good it pops my thumb right off.

How technicals that Laughing

Not entirely true, the temperature of my NSR has remained the same after de-restriction. Also the bike was able to rev to 11,000rpm before de-restriction. The only main difference is it can get to higher revs in 6th gear.

However I will agree that in the de-restricted form it should be maintained more frequently.
