The answer seems obvious but best to be sure

When replacing the Oil Filter durin an oil change you 'Prime' the filter first... am i correct to presume that means fill it with fresh oil?

I've never filled a filter before fitting it on anything, and that's filters on anything from 125cc bikes to 16 litre trucks.

I concur with the no filling option - I did it a couple of times, but quickly realised that most of the oil would come out as you screwed it on (being as I've never encountered a filter which is not horizontal). Therefore its pointless, messy and wasteful.

I thought id check as i seemed to recall it being written down somewhere about 'priming' the filter, looking again at the bike, filling the thing and then fitting it would lead to nothing more than a big mess...

Chopping the plugs is no problem... its just getting the tank lifted.. airbox out.. the dreaded heat shield Laughing

i'd prolly make a dogs of it if i tried to cheat and simply use some long nose pilers to get in there and unclip them all Shocked

P.S anoyone know of a good way to open the filter up with out the use of a hack saw? im going to run the oil through a screen just to see if its making metal anywhere yet Shocked

Honda recommend you prime the filter first, i.e. fill it with oil. There are occasional problems with Air locks on R6's apparently from failing to prime filters.

Priming oil filters is a grey area... Suzuki state never prime one, like a lot of car manufacturers do...

Its due to the fact your adding oil to the filter after the filter media... when in use the dirty oil enters the filter through the outer holes, passes through the filter and leaves through the centre hole and circulates the engine again... when you prime the filter you adding oil into a location where it shouldve been filtered... the reason a lot of manufacturers state this is bad, is even though its a new bottle of oil, who says its debris free?? Theres possibilitys of debris from the oils manufacturing process and the manufacturing process of the container its been put into.

Some people say its a good idea as it gets oil to the engine fractionally quicker, others say its a bad idea due to above. Another 50/50 issue with no clear right or wrong... so take ya pick.

Just remember, if you dont prime it, if the oil lights not out in 5 secs of starting, turn it off!... loosen the filter,wait a few secs and retighten and try again. Also dont forget to recheck the oil level again, as it will drop as its filled the filter cannister.

Surely priming it means smearing some oil round the edge of the filter before fitting to form a seal??

You fill it up, you try putting the filter back on without it coming out!! Shocked

i always apply oil to the filters seals before i screw them on.. never primed one though...

yea, just vipe a drop of oil round the rubber seal before screwing the new filter on (hand tight only!)

as for priming, i wouldnt worry. you'd be suprised at how fast an oil pump can spew oil out, and even if the flow was stopped for a few seconds (which it wont be) it wouldnt matter anyway.

Suzukis have to be done up by hand until the seal touches the engine, then 1 + 1/4 of a turn. (which is pretty tight)
