The other day, my bike wouldnt start, so i put it on charge for 3 days, and now it starts again, and has been ok for a few more days

Now it wont start again.

the battery is at least 2 years old

It may simply be that I need to replace the battery, but this has happened shortly after I find out that I have been running the bike on low oil.

Could low oil do anything to anything that should be charging the battery ?

Could low oil kill the lternator ?

Id like to know that if i get a new battery the problem will be solved.

its a 2001 tt600

Just sounds like the battery has had it's time. You don't have an alarm on do you ?

Sounds quite similar to the ZXR, the battery just wouldn't hold charge, and managed to kill a brand new one in a day or so.

The belt was a little tight and supposedly snapped at first and replaced. It did however turn out to be a dodgy alternator (the rec / reg is combined within so was replaced as a unit £50 off eBay), and bobs your uncle.

Any alarms or immobilizer that could be draining the juice?

Just slap a test meter accross the battery with the engine running, you will soon see if its charging then. Is the battery getting warm when the bike is running?

From another thread:

your battery is being charged permanently when you are riding it,
a trickle charger is sweet, and will do no harm, ive never had the need, the zxr is easy enough to bump start,
to check if your charging system is working (this is not recomended by every one, but i've done it to my zxr, although i wouldn't do it to a fi bike) when the bike is running disconnect one of the leads fromn the battery, if the bike dies something is wrong with your charging circuit,
if not then chances are its sweet Very Happy
still not sorted the bike then??

If your 2 year old plus battery is going from charged to flat with the bike stood in a few days, it's knackered. Muck around for as long as you like with a multimeter, it will tell you nothing. Other than you can't sensibly test anything on a bike with a knackered battery.

Low oil will in all likelihood have absolutely nothing to do with it. So there's some good news Smile

I suggest you get the battery charged to it's normal capacity, give it a test by putting a multimeter across the battery to read the voltage and remember this. Go for a ride and then with a multimeter across the battery test the voltage again, if it's the same or raised leave the bike for the usual ammount of time and then test again, if it's dropped then get a new one, if it's the same then get your charging circuit tested.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but I think some bikes NEED a battery to run, for instance my bandit 400 won't bump if the battery's too low. I could be completely wrong though, I just recall a mechanic telling me this, although I may have got mistaken.
