Muppet-boy here has managed to over-tighten his sump bolt on his CBR and stripped the threads. It screws up, but won't tighten. It doesn't seem to leak with the bike standing, although vibration from riding it will prolly make it fall out.

Can I be lazy and use some threadlock to keep it in its place or have I got to take the sump off and use a helicoil?

Thread lock is not likely to be that good on an oily thread.....

Find a big tap and re tap it to a bigger size, if you can get hold of a bigger bolt, use a grub screw.
Lock tight it, and you could even put some wire on it so you dont loose it if it falls out.

or if you want to bodge...

liquid metal (prolly wont work)
Take the sump off, put a nut and bolt thru it with some downty washers (washers with rubber seals) or even copper washers.
Weld the hole up, make a new one at a later date.
Areldite, or liquid metal the bolt in place, note: youd have to take sump off, as it wont take if theres oil on there.

Or...

Buy a new sump

you stripped the thread off the sump plug or the sump? my mate over tightedned mine and i had to replace the sump, few months later he cross threaded his rear caliper bolt after attempting to change his rear pads...
anyway back to this subject, if its the plug thats damaged then take it to a local mech to repair the thread if its the sump itself then a big tap might do? am not sure though its a bit tricky.

What do you mean by sump bolt?

I found a place that was selling Helicoil kits for less than £20, including spark plug and sump plug inserts. I shall have to search for it again.

Helicoil in situ, flush the engine with a few litres of cheap oil, then fresh quality oil and a new filter. Did the same on my last Gixxer.

Don't try threadlock, PTFE tape etc.....you'll die when the sump bolt falls out at 110mph.

That sounds like what I'll do.

I don't really want to have to take the bike to pieces to fix it, especially outside my house.

I don't think plod/neighbours would take to that too kindly.

Now I need to find someone who sells helicoils..... hmm.

Check the sump bolt size. Some Honda's come with a 12mm bolt so the hole can be taken out to 14mm.

Indeed it is, it's an M12x20.

Just trekked all over west london trying to find someone who sells helicoil kits.

No joy.

taking the sump off isnt a big job, its only fairings really.
Plod cant say anything to you for fixing your bike.

JB Weld will fit the bolt in and make it oil tight, until you can get it repaired properly.
