When the ZX7R was serviced the mechanic noted that the right hand brake pads moved about within the caliper, squeeze the lever and they bite onto the disc. He was a little confused as was I, although you can hear a clunk-clunk noise as the wheel spins and the pads knock about. As they worked no more was said, but it is concerning me.

The front brake is not what I would expect and maybe if they weren't loose it would respond a lot better rather than the last few mm of squeeze on the lever.

Had a quick look today and the pads on both sides in both calipers jiggle about? The hole where the spindle goes through the pads is quite large compared to the diameter of the spindle and the tension plate that fits on top can only go one way.

How much pad movement is allowed in calipers?

Should I be concerned or am I right to be confused?

there should only be a few mm of play, my pads dont move much on my fzr but then again it might be different on the ninja, are you a member of a ninja owners forum? i'd ask them as they'd know best. it is a bit strange that, maybe it is causing a bit of loose braking that your not getting the full potential of. i'd look into it personally.

Do you mean they move up and down on the pin/s that hold/s them in? Or do you mean they move side to side towards the pistons?

Get some pics up if you can, always helps.

sounds like bad pads, like someones made the holes in the top bigger or something, does it look like its been filed? or anything dodgey?

Nothing dodgy, but on 1st inspection it looked like the spindle hole was elongated and not round.

Could remove one and compare with a new one from the shops just to make sure.

On my rear caliper there are spring clip things that fit over the top of the pads near the holes (however, I'm not sure what these are for). Have you got a manual or could you find a parts diagram and see if there are any pieces missing/or fitted incorrectly.

No, but doesn't appear anything to be missing, just one pin and a tension plate on top. The calipers on the FZR had the tension plate fit under the brake pad pins so pushing down on them and preventing them from moving.

i think that its been reshaped due to vibrations or forcer from braking, maybe they had a bit missing out the pad like a chip or something and have just moved that way, or maybe where all totally off and there sposed to move like this, the only way to find out is to ask another owner.
