PostPosted: 21:49 - 09 Oct 2007    Post subject: Mitsubishi Evo 4 - Advice Please Reply with quote

Evening all,

I'm selling my bike and car this winter and I'm going to replace the bike with a ZX-7R in the summer and an Evo 4 as soon as possible.

Just wondered if anyone on here has one or has owned one at some point and had any pointers, tips or advice on buying and running one?

Cheers Thumbs Up

Price range is important and so is the running costs!!!

Had two friends with fours. One was mint, the other was (is) rough. Never seen a jap car rust in the places the second one has!!

Mileage and service history/receipts will be V important. If its a high miler straight from an importer with no history then avoid like the plague. The turbo obviously has a lifespan and will need sorted. The dreaded brown smoke out the back on changing gear/flooring it is an obvious sign.

Fuel bill will be a killer, far worse than an impreza. Finish is awful. Servicing is frequent, oil changes come around every 4k or so iirc. If it goes bang then your looking at major cash.

Like the above post said, if you can stretch a few K for a later model then you may save it in the long run!! Remember to think that the speed and fun is great now but will it still be 'special' when your sat in traffic on the way to work in the dead of winter and your running it to its next service and doing about 15-23mpg. If you have the cash, get it and turn the boost right up and have the time of your life!!

these days id have the new evo over the scooby but thats not really relevant

No, you don't have a leg to stand on. Maybe he should get a Subaru Legacy or Forester Perhaps? Rolling Eyes Wink

I've just bought a lovely silver Impreza WRX and I have to say its in excellent condition and it goes very well. Despite this, I don't think I'd ever be caught giving such a rash statement as "A subaru is better than an Evo" Particularly as the Evo usually wins on performance. The Subaru wins on practicality, hence why I've just bought one.

I haven't driven it much yet so can't really comment on economy, but I'd take a guess that it is better than the evo.

An EVO is a SUBARU, just 100% better quality in everything.

Maybe the SCOOBYS do sound good, but you can get an EVO with a decent exhaust on that sounds excellent, just hasnt got the burble! Cool

I'd have an EVO over a SUBARU everytime. Cool

I'd look at taking a scooby if the price was right and it turned out to be better in the long run.

The EVO will need servicing every 4500 miles, here is a link to show the sort of prices you can expect to pay.

https://www.xtreme-uk.net/Evolution567ServiceUpgradePriceList.asp

A friend of mine had an EVO 6 - it went through tyres and clutches like you wouldn't believe, although he did use it to its full potential on occasions.

Scoobys are cheaper to run overall as the servicing is along the line of a normal car

I think privately, you have to pay about £5k for a decent one, £7.5k ish and you may get a P1.

Garaged - well a mate of mine bought one from his brother-in-laws garage. £5k and its a pile of shit, didnt even have wastegate/BOV/DV, exhaust system or nothing. Needed a new radiator straight away, and has needed 2 clutches, in 1 year! Rolling Eyes

The VI is the best according to the people that know.

Instead of splashing your cash on an early EVO, have a look at a similar aged Scooby. Cheaper to insure, run and maintain. Better looking in my book too Whistle

On paper the evo is quicker is it not? More aggresive? Theyre definately a bit rarer around this way and imo they look better.

The subaru is known to be a better everyday car. I wouldnt use the term cheaper to run though, more like a little less expensive.

As for the finish, I think it could be very close!!!!

How on Earth can someone offer car advice when not only have they not driven either car in question, but they can't actually drive? Laughing

Hey guys, I've never studied medicine but feel free to come to me for advice on any illnesses you should contract...

Exactly what I was going to say. I know four people with Scoobies and they're (comparitively) two a penny.

I guess if u use the term offering an opinion rather than giving advice it makes more sence

some things dont need experience to give advice anyway, ive never experienced AIDS but i could still advise you not to get it Mr. Green

enough smart arse comments from me anyways, ill leave this to the people who know what they're on about Thumbs Up

I looked at getting an Evo IV or V before I brought the Supra. As a play thing I'd go for an Evo, but as an everyday car I'd go for a Scooby. But to be honest, I wouldn't ever buy a Scooby as I just dont like them. Couple of my mates have owned various Imprezza's and I've never really been that impressed with them.

Evo's seem to hold on to their value more too.

Still wondering about a car I saw on the M4. Basic outline was 350Z but badged as a Skyline with round rear lights (and fitting very well) and a few other differences.

All the best
