Are there noise regulations for road bike and if there is what are they plus if there are regulations on noise levels how come harleys have stupid loud exhuast which are straight through pipes

Hi

There are noise regs and fairly tight. Think the limit is now about 80db, but this is tested in a particular way.

As to markings:-

Thats certainly true on bikes straight out of the factory. As far as the MOT goes it still relies on the tester deciding whether it is louder than standard or not.

Just because it gets through the MOT doesn't mean it is legal, and the police can quite happily do you for an exhaust your MOT tester has passed. Note also that the fines / possible prison sentence apply to those selling the incorrectly marked exhausts.

i bought one of those removeable baffles off ebay and it passed the mot and then i removed it to get the cagers attentions again, police dont seem to notice as i've seen quite alot of them lurking in junctions lately at night the sneaky bastards. my exhaust is quite loud too. its one of them "depends if the copper got a bit off the wife" thing.

But dont you get a rectification notice and sent to an MOT Tester? or can they do you at the side of the road?

Surely if your can passed an MOT, they would be unlikely to get a prosecution to stick as you (the layman) and an expert (the mot tester) tell you its ok?

You can get away with loud pipes if you ride carefully. Doing 30mph in first through a resedential area will most likely get one unwanted attention after a few windows break.

If you get a rectification notice I have no doubt whatsoever that the chap testing will make damn sure that the noise is within reasonable limits as he doesnt want the police investigating him too. At the end of the day the MOT is only really valid for the moment that the test happened. Its more of a minor inconvenience. Cool

To go with Fastguts comments above, the police have the option to give you a rectification notice, but they are also well within their powers to prosecute you instead (and possibly as well).

The prosecution would be quite easy. Open and shut case. Exhaust doesn't have the legally required markings so you would be guilty.

the exhuast i have is an beowolf road can in stainless steel which has an bs number stamped on it but it has the option to have the baffle in or out.

would my can be classed as illigel if the baffle was out as i know race cans that clearly say not for road use are a no no but i thought road cans that have a bs stamp on them are ok

yea it sounds really nice and the price was really good too. i have the baffle in at the mo and it sounds nice and deep but i tried it with a k and n filter in and the baffle removed and it really roars and sends flames out too i was well grinning with joy.

Get a second hand one from a big twin like an rsv. Cheaper and the baffling has usually been blown to bits so it sounds much nicer than stock new cans for the sv.

Two points. The baffle must be perminanty fixed (this is why Akrapovic put a tiny pathetic tack weld on the bolt that locates the road baffle, so it is technically perminantly fixed) and by removing the baffle you are modifying the exhaust.

So strictly speaking the exhaust is not legal with the baffle in place (very strictly speaking) and would be illegal once the baffle is out as it would be modified.

how would someone go about moving a baffle from a endurance can that hasn't got a removable baffle? is the only way to chop it half and take it out?

which model have you got? the rivets on the rings or the internal allen key bolt? if you have the one i used to have on my FZR dont bother lol cos you just snap off the allen key.

i see, has that got a baffle? dont think it has, get a Db killer off ebay too so all you have to do is drill a small hole in the spout and put it in and it will be alot quieter. then all you need to do is remove the not for road use sign lol. Thumbs Up

and it keeps the police off your back if its loud as fook.
but mearly for MOT purpose, mines in the garage collecting dust, only was in the bike for 2 weeks to pass mot and then took it out. Thumbs Up
