been toying with the idea of maybe a turbo or super charger on the old fzr4, its a keeper so i would like to maybe up the anti on the 400s power with a booster rather than lug the engine out for a 600 and all that.
if i was to put either on what work would need to be done?
remap the cdi? re jet the carbs? renew the engine a lil?
any info would be great.
thanks.

It might not be the info you want but will save you money.
Just get a bigger bike.

Paddy.

i will do, but like said, the fzr is worth nothing to no one other than me. so i would like it to be a bit more powerful, not right away, i've spent so much time and money on it to sell now anyway, it would be pointless to sell it for nothin.

you'd be better off reboreing it than turbo or supercharging it,
you'd have to throw a fortune at it and lots of time to get a turbo or super charger running smoothly,
even reboring it would cost more than buying a 600cc engine and making that fit, you could sell the 400cc engine and recover some of the money buying the 600cc engine.
or if you were feeling really keen, the 1000cc engines seem to go for cheaper than the 600's Very Happy muhuhahah
it would probably be a mission squeezing it inthere and probly would require strengthening of the 400 frame and possibly new brakes,
but anything is possible if you're keen enough

maybe buying a 600 and .......
turbo that? Laughing

to be honest with you i'd just like to give my fzr that stupidly insane boost of a blower. i know its more logical to buy a bigger bike/engine, but to be honest am keeping this bike so anything bigger i do get wont last as long as my fzr, and my soon to be CG.
i'm more keen to do it after i read the vfr800 thread, i saw a turbo on a 400 with 600 engine etc that he did and it looked great but like i said after reading the vfr800 one its made me want to do it more.
i just want the 400 engine to produce a better bhp with the turbo.
something to do lol.

Have you thought about fitting Nos..A few hundred quid will see good HP gains and you can fit it on your next bike as well. The cost of fitting a bespoke turbo/airbox.intercooler/exhaust etc aint cheap and you dont have an awfull lot of room on a little 400 to play with either. Not to mention once you sell the bike It's money lost.

yes i have thought about it alot, would be great too, i'm not sellin the bike up so dont need to worry about that, maybe nos and turbo Laughing the greed starts!
wouldnt the nos eat my pistons? well i suppose that turbo would too but i dunno, i really need info.
i want more hp but i want the same engine and the same bike lol.
less tax for a 400 Thumbs Up although i'm tempted buy tuning a 600.

technically possible, practically difficult. To get any sort of decent performance you are going to need a a tiny turbo unit, something like the IHI RHB5 unit that was on CX500 turbos. Then you need a custom inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, possibly new carbs, ideally an intercooler (depending on boost level), ignition remapping is prolly a good idea, and you may need an aftermarket ignition unit depending on the spark voltage the current setup produces.

If you did all that and pushed it hard, you might get as much as 100% more power, which is going to put you into modern 600 territory. That prolly means a new heavy duty clutch set, maybe reworked gearbox internals, bigger rad, bigger oil cooler, maybe bigger oil pump, sump spacer, maybe clutch cover spacer, low compression pistons/head work, maybe cams.

If it was mine, I'd stick a 600 lump in, its simpler, its going to be more reliable and spares are easier to get hold of.

The 1000 fits easier than you'd think. Laughing (yours is an older one than what I had though and 600 conversions are popular with yours)

I managed to squeeze a 165bhp 1040 EXUP motor into a 3TJ which is actually quite easy as the engine doesnt actually sit between the main frame rails.

I did manage to shag the frame in next to no time though but it was good fun while it lasted. Wink

Hi

The FZR400 engine is not known for being strong, let alone when tuned. Nor is the FZR600 engine (which had a regular habit on throwing rods out of the cases when they raced them). Bolting a turbo on would make them about as reliable as a cardboard submarine.

If you did turbo it then it would be a massive amount of work. A turbo would be required, all the exhaust manifolds, inlet manifolds, probably an intercooler (not sure where you would fit that), sealed carbs (with the float bowl vents going into the manifolds so the float bowls were pressurised by the same amount as the intake air), reduced compression (either bodged with a spacer plate or with some custom low compression pistons), programmable ignition timing, higher pressure fuel pump, almost certainly stronger rods to take the extra load, heavy duty clutch, etc.

Realistically you would land up with something that cost far more than a pretty new R6 yet was slower and heavier, with a dubious power delivery.

All the best

Keith

if i did that then its beating the whole 400 cc thing, on the other hand, if i didnt fit a turbo what other performance mods could i do that wont throw my rods through the side? some one mentioned nos before, what work would i need for that?
keep the suggestions coming and thanks everyone. Thumbs Up

Hi

Any serious tuning is likely to throw the rods through the side (a decent blueprinting job would probably gain power and reliability though). Although NOS is a hell of a lot cheaper and possibly easier to set up from scratch than a turbo (although you will really struggle to find an insurance company to touch you with it).

For very rough idea of costs, a turbo kit from Big CC Racing would start at about £4500. OK, you can save a bit of money sourcing 2nd hand bits, but you can also add a load to the cost by having to get one off manifolds designed and made. Spending at least 5 times the value of the bike is not really a good idea.

All the best

Keith

nos is notoriously bad for engines as it causes the bike to run lean unless you can up the fuel while the n20 is being injected.
then you have the problem that its really stressing the engine,

you could lighten all the connecting rods buy stronger lighter valves. ect ect, there is plenty you could do, but really the increse in proformance will be minimal.

c'mon, throw a couple of hundred at it and put the 1000 in it Very Happy

lol hmmmz, i dont want to on THIS 400 maybe if i was to buy a 3tj or something, then i would be extremely tempted to fighter it.
1000 fzr engine,
turbo,
nos,
etc.
but looks like i'm better off just havein my engine blue printed maybe have my head gas flowed and my valves upgraded for stronger ones and new pistons etc.

You do realise you are still looking at a bill of several thousand pounds for someone decent to do that work.

Simple way to gain power with the FZR400 is to just put in an FZR600 engine. Basically the same engine so goes in very easily (plenty of internal bits on the 600 engine have the model code of the 400 cast into them).

All the best

yes thats true flinging a fzr 600 in would be great, but i dunno if that engine is ok or not, also, my bike would be a fzr 600 then. but i dunno i'm kinda toying with the idea, if blueprinting gives more reliability then i'd be happy to pay out. my inlet valves will need replacing soon anyway, and this winter i need to do my gear box and valve clearances.
thanks alot for the input everyone, any more ideas?

It cost me less than £300 to get the 1000 into the 4.

I did have a slight advantage though. I had both bikes complete so had all the loom, cdi and carbs etc allready.

Most of the cost was getting a good welder to lop off some of the engine mounts and re-weld them so they would line up with the 1000's mount points.

One of the rear mounts was a perfect match for the 1000 so I didnt even need to touch that which helped a lot.

I'v even found a pic of it. Forgive it looking tatty as hell, that was taken in it's very early stages. I did end up fightering it.

Hi

If it is a definate keeper then think about it. It will add little to the value though, and power gains will be small.

As a keeper the money would be better spent on buying up decent stocks of easily damaged items, such as fairings, headlights, cdi units, etc. Engines will be readily available for far longer.

All the best

Keith

I think the 400 is ok with a 6 in it.

Mine went pearshaped because one of the engine mounts came loose and it twisted it. Embarassed

Speak to someone like Spondon Engineering. Suspect you could do a fair amount with extra gussets in some areas, but not worth doing anything until you know what you want to do (and what shape whatever you want to install is).

All the best

lol whey gixermick! welder not hot enough? kickstart, i bought some new fairings a while back in near mint condition, and i already have my ones i have on now althought they are very shagged! i should get a set of spare rims and different tyres for differnt weather situations or just for spares. i was going to R6 the fzr 4 but changed my mind after buying the original fairing.
maybe i should have it blueprinted with a few more mods hmmm
