Well after finally getting my life back exactly how i wanted it with another bike which i love i've taken another few steps back again.

Thursday night i was on a motorbike social (which is ironic) and someone by accident hit my right arm side on and i got a sudden rush of pain to my arm again Sad (i have 2 plates in there and has never been right since my off April '06)

I was wasted but the pain was so much i had to go back, went to the gf's and thought id see how i was in the morning and woke up 5am (when the beer was wearing off) in real pain. Went to the hospital and the surgery (bone graft) i was going to have this summer is now going to be next weekend possibly (if they can fit in).

Told to come back Thursday and the pain now is quite bad but just cant use my arm, couldn't take any notes in lectures and wont be able to got next 7 weeks at least (the cast will be from my thumb to [ast my elbow and last time i couldnt really use it. Rag up and they said i have to go though the a+e system again if i feel its got any worse...

Feel a shit about it tbh as don't want to either get a bad grade at uni this year (which counts) or repeat the year. But it also reminded me of what i had to go though when i came off and now im thinking i have too much to lose if i came off again. When i got another bike i vowed to be safer and not ride the speeds i use to and tbh nothing has changed, only i have more power now to rag Neutral Confused . Ive had at least 5 vivid very close calls since starting to ride again and just haven't seemed to have learn anything.

So, thinking about selling up, it would break my heart as dont love nothing more than riding but it really has fucked the last couple years of my education and life in general, plus i dont think i have the strength to go though anything similar anytime soon.

Id come back to it i guess after uni but maybe time to call it a day till i'm medically fine.

although there seems to be no real point to this thread, has anyone been in a similar situation where they think quitting for a few years is the best idea?

If it's any consolation I had a bone graft from hip onto collarbone a couple months back, and the hip didn't hurt at all afterwards - apart from a small plaster and a couple staples I wouldn't have known they had done anything.

It has made me think about being more careful with myself, it's not the pain as such I found but the long recovery time that's especially annoying.

My opinion, give up now or die soon. Get your degree, get wed and have kids then think about riding again.

Yeah I agree with Ariel, life throws some serious shit at us from time to time and we have to make the best decision at that time. If the best decision is to give up bikes (for now) then that's what you should do. It doesn't mean forever, it's about approaching life from a balanced perspective, which I appreciate is difficult when you're passionate about something. I wish you all the best Andy take your time over your decision. Karma Thumbs Up

They plan to take it from my hip too. Yea its the not being able to do anything thats the bit that gets me down, i mean not being able to write its whats hte most depressing, as at uni.

On the other hand you could walk out and get struck by a bus/lightning, the train derail, car smash, coronary and countless other things that could end your life suddenly and unexpectedly.

Instead of thinking on the negative side, which I realise is harder to do than say, treat everyday as your last (one of them will be) and live life to the full.

I cannot think of anything worse than getting old and thinking 'I wish I had done........ when I was young enough'.

this is true and this is the mentallity that i use when i spend the best part of 3 months hospital/home bound and even when i snapped a plate in my arm.

As silly as it sounds im not that bothered about the dying bit as i have the same change as any other rider its the frustrating cycle i seem to be going though of injury, recovery, enjoy, injury.....

i took several years out (about 10), not for medical reasons.

i got back into biking 2 years ago and while i was away i missed it but my life was more important. i had to prioritise my spending and a bike wasnt an option.

anyway older, more financially secure and wiser (perhaps) so came back to biking.

i agree with ariel sort yourself out and come back at a stage in your life when you can/want to enjoy aspects of biking again.
