Interesting!

After reading the article, I'd have to say this one was my favourite sentence: -

Person who knows complicated stuff wrote:
As with previous particle accelerators, people both inside and outside the physics community have voiced concern that the LHC might trigger one of several theoretical disasters capable of destroying the Earth... or even... THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE!! MUAHAHAHA!!!.

*might have edited that a little bit for effect, but still.

Man... everyone's gonna be well pissed off with Switzerland when everyone's dead and inside a variety of black holes. I know I will be.

You have to stand in awe of their arrogance; "A small chance..."

Well, excuse the rest of the world's population if we don't want to take even a "small chance" of being vapourised into nothingness.

Yet another reason we need to advance the 'global' space program. This shit needs to be done in a galaxy far, far away. Black holes sound fuckin' gay.

without reading said article, the LHC consists of a 27 kilometer cirle, lined with electromagnets. the magnets run in sequence to push two atoms around the cirle in opposite directions until travelling at somwhat near the speed of light. when the atoms cllide and split, they smash into even tinerier pieces teaching us about... stuff.

to create a "black hole" (it isnt a real black hole since they consist of collapsed red giant stars) two of these particles need to collide and produce a mass so dense that it has amazing gravitaitional pull.

something like that, anyway

possibly, not too brushed up on atomic physics Laughing

Its because they want to find out mad shit. Mad mad freaky particle shit.

Apparently particles can be 'influenced' by another particle several miles away. Also theres all kinds of particles (eg tachyons which should ring a bell from star trek) that we have no idea how they work.

If we want to advance the space program, it will be doing things like this Wink

Oh and FYI, pretty much everyone was determined the first nuclear bomb would ignite the atmosphere. Guess what. They still did it.

It might even produce the elusive Higgs Boson particle.

Which would be nice.

Any particular date in May 2008?

It's just that if they start this up before 9th May and it does destroy the planet or universe we might have to cancel the NABD Rally.

If it happens early on the Sunday morning, I doubt anybody would notice though.

I've given that some thought as well. However, I've read some plans, and comments from reputable people on said plans, detailing spacecraft easily capable of 1/10 the speed of light, using current technologies. Surely we could wait ten years for that thing to get far enough away to where I won't have to miss the series finale of Heroes. Idea

Oh, and glad to see you weren't buried in that avalanche of good karma, McGee. Thumbs Up

I'd read this aswell, as i understand it atoms can be linked so that influencing one causes the same effect to an atom elsewhere (i think this is the same theory behind giant wormhole "gates" ) don't think miles, theres a limit of something like 100meters.

Its been used already for encrypting absolutely impossible to crack, trouble is cost and the fact the link don't last.

I promised myself never to take up physics as a subject, its guaranteed to drive you mad.

At some point we'll mess with the integrity of reality itself, and then we'll be truly fecked.

But as this 'reality' is nothing but an illusion anyway it won't actually matter. It'll amount to little more than a kid breaking it's toy, and mommy will soon provide a replacement. Thumbs Up

We struggle to launch rockets past our earths (piss weak) gravity. A 27 km tube... ?

Yeh right.

It would be even more prohibitively expensive then it already is.

Besides if a proper black hole was caused it wouldnt help to be barely past saturn or wherever it would be.

I quote bill bryson from a short history of nearly everything;

'particles have a quality known as spin and, according to quantum theory, the moment you determine spin of one particle, its sister particle, no matter how distant away, will immediately begin spinning in the opposite direction and at the same rate'

...

'...proved in 1997 when physicists at the university of geneva sent photons seven miles in opposite directions and demonstrated that interfering with one provoked an instantaneous response in the other'

half life killed itself with the super long cable car intro which AFAIK at the time I didn't know if it could be skipped, got bored and did something else instead

Nah, it's not as interesting as that unfortunately. Quantum entanglement doesn't let you transmit information faster than light.

It's equivalent to having two envelopes, one with a red card in it and the other with a black card. No matter how far apart the envelopes are when you open them, you know that if you get a red card the other is black, and vice versa... but there's no way to influence the colour of the card you get.

Interesting stuff though, but i stand by my opinion of physics and especially quantum physics will drive you mad..

Although... a quark is named a quark partly because it rhymes with pork.
