without reading said article, the LHC consists of a 27 kilometer cirle, lined with electromagnets. the magnets run in sequence to push two atoms around the cirle in opposite directions until travelling at somwhat near the speed of light. when the atoms cllide and split, they smash into even tinerier pieces teaching us about... stuff.

to create a "black hole" (it isnt a real black hole since they consist of collapsed red giant stars) two of these particles need to collide and produce a mass so dense that it has amazing gravitaitional pull.

something like that, anyway

Apparently particles can be 'influenced' by another particle several miles away. Also theres all kinds of particles (eg tachyons which should ring a bell from star trek) that we have no idea how they work.

If we want to advance the space program, it will be doing things like this Wink

Oh and FYI, pretty much everyone was determined the first nuclear bomb would ignite the atmosphere. Guess what. They still did it.

It's just that if they start this up before 9th May and it does destroy the planet or universe we might have to cancel the NABD Rally.

If it happens early on the Sunday morning, I doubt anybody would notice though.
