I have just upgraded my whole system, including hard drive, after killing my last P.C Embarassed

Unfortunatly I did not get the opportunity to save all my music and photos to CD's and DVD's before the P.C went bye-bye, so now I have all the stufff on the old HD.

Now, I can access the HD cos I have an extenal case that will accept it, and the new PC can see into it, but it won't (can't) access the 'user' folder, which is where all my photos etc etc are.....!

Being a techno-numpty I don't know how to sort this Sad

Can anyone help?

Try re-naming the folder.

Try dragging the folder to your new HD.

Did you have a password on your account on the old comp? This is most likely why you can't access the files.

2 ways to do this, If you can boot your old hdd up, Just remove any passwords from the user accounts and that should sort it, But since you upgraded i'm guessing the hdd won't boot with the new hardware. (Try booting it in safe mode to remove the password)

OR

I'm not on a windows machine and i'm doing this from memory so you might need to read between the lines if I miss a bit. I've googled the pics so yours might look slightly different

Boot into safe mode (Press F8 a few times before the windows loading screen comes up)

Find the folder you can't access, Right click it and click Sharing and Security.

You should have this:

Click Security then Advanced at the bottom.
You should now have this:

https://web.mit.edu/ist/products/winxp/advanced/backup02_permissions.gif

Select the 'Administrator' account.

Check the 'Replace Permission entries on all.............'

Hit Apply.

I haven't done this in a while so hopefully this helps

Thumbs Up

I've still not been able to access the user folder on the old drive, but I have a question.....

If I was to disconnect the hadr drive on another computer and connect my old hard drive (which contains windows etc etc) and boot the other computer up, would that work?

In that position I could just burn all the stuff I want onto a DVD(s) and then transfer it to my new one.

Is that an option or not?

It will work if the motherboard has the same chipset, Which it probably won't.
