I was watching a couple of old anime films a bit earlier and noticed this sideways bike breaking thing, as below

https://youtube.com/watch?v=2dV-peBFCxw

at 5 minutes 15 seconds the sideways braking (Golden boy)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=W_Rcny0aNLE

At 2 minutes 14 seconds taken from Akira also sideways braking.

Is this actually possible in real life? I mean rather than what you see in speedway, since even I can go sideways on sand and loose soil.

Or is it because it is impossible and thus the reason as to why I've only ever seen a maneuver like that done in Anime or in a game?. and if it is possible anybody got a youtube of it? (yes I am quite sure that for anime and game purposes sideways braking like that is highly exaggerated).

Anybody any ideas? (oh and I mean while staying on the bike as in both of the clips above rather than lowsiding it and falling off)

Ta

It's all about balancing momentum and grip. If you can do that, perfectly, you can slide both wheels sideways on dry tarmac without falling off.

I doubt there's anyone who can do it 100% consistently though, there are too many variables.

I have cornered bikes that way, turn, hit hear brake, skid back wheel take foot off rear brake and open throttle fast.
Great when it works., but it can go very wrong.

It works great with a little trials sidecar on the bike, you stop quicker than the tune with the nice tits.

I've seen G do something similar on my KE100... Its more like the Golden Boy one, as he didn't really slide the front wheel.

this guy seems to consistently be able to control his traction so he can keep the bike sideways, so it is certainly conceivable that he can do a skid turn.

Used to have great fun on my old Africa Twin going side ways with the back brake but never did front brake at the same time though.

i went to nec and had a go on supermotos and they were trying to teach us how to do it.

They did it by down changing a gear rather than using the back brake, as that way the wheel doesnt actually lock so its more controllable.

Drifting is started on the rear brake though...... you lose traction by using rear brake then gas it before it grips again Thumbs Up
