Not strictly bike stuff but a two-stroke supercharged engine which isnt that far anway i guess!!

basically im doing a project for uni on two stroke engines with has been the most fun ive had with a piece of coursework ever.

However, when talking about further development on the two-stroke engine, i found while researching about a supercharged two-stroke engine that toyota once developed in a book from the library.

This engine uses a roots-type supercharger to more efficiently get rid of the exhaust gases and with the objective to get high torque and lower rpm and to be smoother. This engine also uses many features of a four-stroke engine such as four-valve cylinders and fuel injection (which is less of a four-stroke feature but further development anyways).

What i was hoping is someone could tell me any more, what the engine was used for? did it ever go into production and what year this was done?

Lotus are doing similar work... but as far as I know its never gone into production, either by Toyota or Lotus.

Don't know I'm afraid, Lotus are working on it now as far as I am aware.

Hi

The only Lotus thing I have heard of with 2 strokes was a mechanical trapping valve they developed. Worked a bit like a blade power valve, but was used to close the exhaust port off around the time the piston reach bdc, so on its way up the piston didn't push the mixture straight out of the exhaust.

Not heard of the Toyota engine at all. There have been a fair few attempts at building 2 strokes with conventional valves of some kind (might be worth searching for "3 stroke" as a few seem to have been colloqueally called that). Also quite a few large diesel engines are 2 strokes, using a supercharger rather than the crankcases to get mixture in.

All the best

Keith
