Tonight Ive finally had to admit that Im never going to get to the bottom of where my late husbands ring went to after he died.

The fact that it was removed (stolen) from him by a policeman/woman or paramedic makes it even harder to take. These people are in a position of trust and now Im left thinking that how can you trust anyone out there, when even someone in that job, crb checked and everything would do that!

I just feel sick to the stomach that all that can happen now is that it becomes a piece of paper and no-one will ever be held accountable for it when its an offence which should mean prison.

And its all because at the time I was too polite to ask for it, thinking Oh that would seem disrespectful to the dead, not knowing that it was already in someones pocket heading for the pawn shop no doubt as a perk of the job.

Im not materialistic, and it wasnt the cost of it or anything, its just the violation, you dont expect it, and dont want to believe people are capable of being so heartless and cruel. Sad

Dont know if its related or not, but crematorium staff count it as a perk to take any jewellery they find on the deceased, since its a waste to burn it along with everything else.

You're right, it is a heartless and cruel thing to do. But dont write off all police/paramedics because of the actions of one person.

Fran sorry to hear this. I would be rather angry myself as i would have wanted it as a keepsake and someone going about with it would annoy me also. I dont know what mentality you would have to be to take something of a dead person and pawn/steal it, its disrespectful.

I am just shocked myself here. Shocked

That's absolutely awful. I can't imagine how you feel about this. Maybe you could either ask to speak to someone at the Police station about the theft?

*edit - just read your other post. Excuse my not very helpful advice.

My Mrs is a student nurse in Manchester and she's just told me the procedures involved

Apparently when some dies in hospital its down to the nursing staff to prepare the body, this involves removing drips, dressings, clean him or her up and remove all jewellery, bag it, list it and send it to the General Office before the body is given over to the porters.

2 nurses have to sign for the items removed and records are kept in the general office, if you have not already done so speak to the patient liason officer at the hospital who should be able to help you fing out at what point it went missing.

Well my husband was outside you see, and its apparently 'procedure' to either touch nothing until in the mortuary, where its then bagged and logged or give any jewellery back straight away.

I saw it on his hand and then 5hrs later when only police and paramedics had been near him they took some photos and it was gone - so as far as they are concerned now they never had it - so its not their problem. I knew one of them had taken it the minute I realised they had no ‘recollection’ of it, what’s worse is that the inspector said - well if you had told me the day later I could have searched lockers, but its too late now......Yeah its so late because about 8 of your officers, sergeant’s etc etc have fobbed me off for 19 months because they didn’t want to deal with it.

It pisses me right off that none of them said, you need to make a formal complaint – which is what I’m doing now. It took an operator on the phone to say why have you not complained about this?………which was the first thing I should have been told to do according to inspector.

Utter incompetence and disgusting act in the first place. I really don’t want to tar them all with the same brush. But if a pupil collapsed in my classroom today and I nicked their mobile from their blazer, Id lose everything and would not be able to work again.

I had a police fine a while ago and forgot to send the money until last minute.

I stupidly shoved £30 cash (notes) into an envelope and send it off to the courts.

Funnily enough they never recieved it and i had to pay again and because i had "missed" the original deadline i had to pay double.

Thumbs Down

My money is on the paramedics, they dont get paid as much, and most of the ones where I live are right slimey people where Id rather take my chances walking to the hospital than get in an ambulance with them and let them work on me.

Suppose you could always go to the hospital with a van, steal a very expensive piece of equipment and use that as compensation once youve fobbed it on the black market Thumbs Up

Yeah brilliant fvcking idea that is Rolling Eyes So for one greedy copper/paramedic stealing a ring your gonna take a piece of equipment that could be vital to saving several innocent peoples lifes that have no connection to the ring being stolen, brilliant bloody idea that is and it will sure teach that copper/paramedic a lesson Rolling Eyes

sorry to hear about the ring fran, its ashame you can trust the people that are there to be trusted Sad

a paramedic was recently done for stealing a dying mans wallet and using his cash cards, when my other half had his accident i found out where the car had been taken and went to get a lot of stuff out of it, i couldnt find anyone at the recovery place but spotted his work bag lying on the floor in the middle of a portakabin, his wallet was minus the 100 quid hed taken out the bank on his way to work. when i finally found someone and ranted about that i was informed theyd just out it there and hadnt looked in it. i asked about the other items in the car and he said everything was destroyed because there was so much blood everywhere nd t was best i didnt see it as it was so bad, so we lost the 100 quid, 20 cds an exensive bike jacket a work jacket and a load of car tools i was told everything had been pretty much smashed to bits, it wasnt until i met the man who had stayed with Steve at the scene of his accident till the paramedics etc came that i discovered that everything in the boot had been logged by the police and left in as that part of the car was undamaged. his earings and gold necklace and ring were given to me along with his mobile at the hospital. Not everyone in a position of trust is trustworthy Evil or Very Mad

That's terrible! I don't know what to say!

I can relate to how it feels, when my father died in a house fire, a lot of things from parts from the house that weren't fire damaged went missing.

Apart from the initial couple of hours where there were paramedics and fire crew, the police were the only ones had access. They secured the house as it was considered a crime scene and they were the only ones who had access for a week or two.

*hugs*

Make sure they check the pics Fran, they may have no 'recollection' of the ring, but photographic evidence it was there will show them to be liars, thieves or pathetic at their jobs (emergency services should at least be observant)

It makes no difference in the end. No one will ever be prosecuted. We live in a society where people entrusted with power can do anything and get away with it. It would save you a lot of angst if you could somehow forget of the whole incident.

Well its the pics that have shown it to be only either the paramedics or the police who could have taken it, as they were the only ones who were there between me seeing it last and then the photos. Ive been told I will hear from internal affairs about it, but when I dont know. I want to forget about it obviously, but Im not going to purely out of principal, Ive got to be accountable in my job and therefore so should they.
