Has anyone considered that people might actually *gasp* lie to try and influence their case?!
You can see the fella in the video pausing to make his story up!

I think that's a fair point, but it's not the one currently under investigation.

True - I was referring more to the over-hyped and obviously biased article, where the ex-detainee is presented as the paragon of virtue whilst the government and contractors are obviously shady characters, and not to be trusted.

Nope. He speaks and writes better English than most people on these forums, and I doubt he'd struggle to remember it if someone actually had made comments about black monkeys going home. Offensive language does tend to stick in one's head.

You mention compensation as a motive - I'd add to that the simple lure of his 15 mins - and that fact that detainees/immigrants are actually extremely well organised. Most national groupings within the detention estate have their own support groups outside, who coordinate action and information between their fellow nationals in each centre. As such, anything which might discredit BIA or their contractors would definitely be of interest to many people - even if we assume they have no personal vendetta to pursue.

As you said earlier, that isn't the 'problem' under investigation - the apparently poor complaints system is.
I note that the article is fairly sketchy about what the complaints actually refer to. I can only go on my own experience, but most complaints that pass through me are regarding the conduct of their case by BIA civil servants, not physical mistreatment - the ratio being probably about 500:1
Others might include people claiming their human rights were infringed by only having Sky in the communal TV rooms, and not piped into their room, and the accusation of racism because the shop doesn't sell the full range of Afro-Caribbean skin products.

Agreed - although they take enough of my cash to try and put on a half decent show once in a while!

Erm Mister James you do realise that Zanulabour made the BBC its propaganda channel after the Hutton affair which found only the BBC to blame right?.
Probably why there hasn't been a Northern Rock story on the Beeb for about a month , or that the Government got an injunction to prevent the reality of Northern Rock being told by the FT
which conviently due to the niceities of the interweb
