Just a quick one, is it legal to park a bike in a pay-and-display space without buying a ticket? As its taxation class is 'Bicycle'?

Also, what's the legality of parking on the pavement as long as it's not causing an obstruction?

Hi, check the car park signs, some do allow bikes to not buy a ticket, others allow no ticket in only allocated "Bike Parking" and more often there's no free parking for bikes.

You can only park in bays designated for bikes in pay and displays. You can park in the bay as long as you pay for it lol but i can see the ticket dissapearing so it wouldnt be advised to do it. Always best to check the signs with all the prices on it etc

Regarding parking on a pavement i always think this is abit of a sticky rule. In quiet areas you can get away with it but in busy streets and within towns Id stick to parking where ever bikes are or in designated bays.

If you parked your bike in a pay-and-display car parking space couldn't you just claim that the ticket you bought was stolen from your bike? Or it must have blown off in the wind? Unless someone will say you didn't buy a ticket or they have cctv then how could they prove you wrong?

A lot of places you have to input part of your reg number on the ticket so they would be able to check up.
You have to be desperate to pay to park your bike except in very busy places.
Even in London I've found you can often spot litle places to squeeze into especially if you're only leaving it an hour or so.

Doesn't matter what it says it's taxation class is. It has a class so its not exempt from tax.

Most, if not all parks state if you have to pay or not in motorcycle bays.
You park in a space that a car would usually fit in and not pay you will get a ticket.

I only park in a pay and display if i'm leaving the bike for several hours OR it's a rough place/somewhere I feel uncomfortable leaving it.

I usually just park on the side of the road wherever there's not yellow lines. The only reason I'll park on a pavement is if there's nowhere else to park or nowhere secure to park, So I can lock it to a lampost.

Read the sign in the car park.....

One in York does not allow you to park a bike either in a bay or at the side, even if you get a ticket, while other parks in york are fine. One in Skipton requires you to buy a ticket if you park in the bike bays...

Parking on the pavement is a very grey area, in general it seems if there are any kind or restrictions for parking such as double yellow lines, you will get a ticket if caught.

Also watch if you park in a cycle bay as yoy can get a ticket for that.... Tax class means nought...

You can legally park in pay and display bays controlled by your local council free, not sure about London.

You can park in any resident bay free all day(or given time limit) if you park at 90 degrees to the kerb.(again, Cept london-not sure there)

Pavements warrant a ticket, kind of for obstruction.

Where do you display your ticket if you do buy one?

In Glasgow city center cars are always parking over the bike bays. So ive had no choice but to park in a car space a couple of times but ive never bought a ticket.

I've never had to do this but If I did i'd rip the ticket in half, stick half on my bike and take the other half with me. That way if they say you haven't bought one you can show them the other half. Also, who's gonna nick the half ticket?

Start a post in the new bikers section if you have any such questions. Some common-sense is required when parking your bike such as if you're parking against the kerb (as in a bike-bay) always park with your rear-wheel against the kerb never your front wheel. There are a number of reasons:
You can sit on the bike, flip up the stand and ride it away, rather than having to try to pull it backwards which risks you dropping the thing or knocking the next bike over.
It stops the camber of the road from rolling the bike off the stand.
It allows you and the bike parked next to you access to the seat from the rear of the bike rather than fighting past handlebars.

In hot weather, take care where you put-down your sidestand, as it can slowly sink into the tarmac and topple your bike over. Find some good standing or use a puck.

Some people park their bikes and leave their chain looped through the wheel and laying on the floor. Most people do this so that the next person can loop their cain through the next bike's chain, thus securing them together.

If you use a disc-lock, park your rear-wheel to the kerb and put the lock on the front disk just below the brak caliper. This means that if you forget it you will opnly be able to move an inch before it stops against the caliper causing little or no damage. If you put it in front of the forks the wheel can do a full turn and smash the disk or the caliper. My brother smashed his CBR forks like this by breaking the caliper hanger off the fork leg.

Never park in bicycle bays (in London at least), they will pick your bike up and take it away.
