Does anyone know about council-service library vans up Manchester way? Is it conceivable that a 1988 library lorry could have done only 19000 miles? What kind of routes do they do, how long do they stop at each town/village etc?

Need quick answers, TIA.

Hi
They tend stop at each place for a couple of hours but even a small village can have 2 stops (they aslo do to the door collections in some cases).

Staffordshire has 11 mobile vans between then they cover 950 stops each fornight covering the whole area.

so I would guess it can soon rack the miles up.

Regards
C

Well, it came down to the guy claiming it had only 19000 miles on it, but when I worked it out (at the last minute) it would have had to have been doing an average of only 588 miles per year. Using rough estimates it was looking like a couple of miles a day, which was totally impossible (say 200 days a year in use). Then he got a bit odd on the phone about it, so we figured it has to have been around the clock and has probably done 119000 miles.

But, after a good couple of months perusing campervans on EBay, and seeing the stupid sort of money even old crap goes for, I figure what I've bought is a pretty good deal. The only downside is the size of the engine, it'll probably get about 18 miles to the gallon. The guy converted it himself and going by the pictures it's a top job (engineer by trade, and has been a kitchen-fitter in the past). And the spec is awesome. A similarly sized and specced US RV, same kind of age (which are considerbly cheaper than UK kit), would be around 15k. I was going to go £7500 on this one, but after sussing the probable mileage I went £6500 and got it for £6200. Even if the entire engine and gearbox needed replacing I'd still be quids in.

Two others, based on the exact same vehicle, and of no better spec or build quality, are going for £11500 and £22000 respectively.

Still, the proof will be in the pudding as they say. I'll be picking it up next weekend. It even has a garage with space for a Blade (I'll be using the space for a Gazebo and a couple of mountainbikes Laughing ).

Check the insurance on it before you bid. The cheapest quote I could get on a minibus ( LDV Convoy) was over a grand.

I think a minibus carries implications of public carriage liability, whereas a motorhome is a personal family vehicle. All the insurance notes I've seen on various listings say how cheap it is to add a motorhome to existing car insurance. On this one the guy says he has it on a classic policy (the vehicle is 1988).

I've already looked into that, but it seems to be a non-goer. It's economically feasible only with petrol engines.

I have been told that it's now legal to put veggie oil in the tank.

I was going to strip all but six seats from the LDV so it would just be a van with six seats. Still a grand+.

the law is changing soonish or has changed the first 2500 litres of your own fuel you make = tax free, I reckon 550 gallons is more than enough to go from one end o Europe to the other.

I'm assuming it's a Diesel, in which case LPG is a no go (can be done, but little point).

The law on using vegetable oil has changed back in July, you can run your vehicle on vegetable oil, or you can refine bio-diesel from it without paying duty on the fuel.

You can refine up to 2,500 litres before paying duty on it.

I've just got me a batch of the chemicals to do the refining and a nice ready supply of free vegetable oil from the local takeaways. In total I've costed it up at 12p per litre.

With regards to the mileage even 119,000 miles is nothing for a diesel engine. I've seen LDV/Transit vans with 4 times the mileage still on their original engine.

The number of seats is an issue too, your insurance has to cover crippling (X) number of people, ie to insure my Zafira cost a bit more than the equvilent car because its got 2 extra seats (and potentially 2 extra passengers) in the boot.

When you said about getting a camper van I thought it'd be a VW at least not an RV.

I know where you're coming from with having a bike, family and kids. I went camping from just 6 weeks old and always in tents of some description so a little more 'luxury' would be nice.

A monkey will be a nice little tourer when at the destination as can be strapped to the back of the van. Whistle

Earlier this year it changed so there's now a 2,000 litre allowance before you even have to notify HM Customs & Excise. Going to Lidl's, buying a trolley full of 1 litre vegetable oil bottles and then going out to the car park and pouring them straight in your tank counts as producing fuel.

My L200 is running on diesel and vegetable oil with the ratio of 1 part diesel to 4 parts veggy oil. You can get twin tank systems or heat exhchanges that allow you to run 100% veggy oil all year round. Have run it on 1:5 before but that was starting to have trouble cold starting.

If you're interested, have a look on:
https://www.biofuelsforum.com/
https://biodiesel.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x?a=cfrm&s=447609751
https://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/forum/index.php

Its worth trying just because its amusing the way people ask what you're doing when filling up on veggy oil in Lidl's car park. Laughing

If you can find a supplier for used cooking oil and have the space for processing it then you can make your own bio-diesel for much cheaper than buying veggy oil.

Before trying it though, do lots of reading up online to see how other people have got on using bio fuels with that engine and fuel pump. Thumbs Up

From what I've read so far there's some sort of issue with waxes in veggie oil clogging up the injectors? Seems to be more of a problem with newer hi-tech motors. The one in my wagon is an old 1988 6-cyl 6-liter oil-crunching munter (Ford Cargo), so I'm hoping it'll be ok. Maybe run injector-cleaner through it after every tankful?

Edit: Wow, that last link looks pretty pukka Ste, thanks. Thumbs Up Very Happy
