BMW ( pre 2000 316 ) sorry bout the mix up

Couple of questions. In particular what are they like to drive, what are they like reliability wise. Im getting driving lessons for christmas and ive already decided what car im getting. Ive got an insurance qoute for it and i can afford it financially, without me having to get rid of the bike. So people. Any one got one, had one?

Dont get a 318 its sh#t, not much price difference between a 320 but a lot of driving difference.

Yeah, but the 320 is a 2litre is it not. And what with my being 18, 19 in april. Insurance is a bit of a problem.

Would've thought insurance on a 318 will set you back a lot at 18 aswell, and the 2doors are a group higher than the 4door. But agree with the other guy, go for a straight six if you're gonna get a beemer and the insurance isn't that much different (get a quote), the 2.5 turbo diesels are good, and cheaper to insure.

My first car was a 1.4 Escort, spent more money buying a 1.4 because there weren't a lot about just assuming it'd be cheapest to insure, after I'd bought it and insured it I actually found out the 1.6 was only a few quid extra and I could've bought one a hell of a lot cheaper as there were loads about.

Lastly, I imagine things have changed in 4years but when I took my pass plus straight after passing my test, it took 50% off my premium with norwich union, which brought it down to £600 from £1200, if it's still as worthwhile might want to have a look, as Pass Plus cost me about £100 back then.

And living in Preston a BM is not the way to go.

Is the pre-2000 318 you're looking at an E36:

If it's the earlier E36 try and get a 318is, as they have around 140bhp and move a hell of a lot better than the normal 120ish bhp of the normal 318. With the E46, you're stuck with 120 unless it's the facelifted model.

If it's been looked after it'll go on forever, and the engine is pretty smooth even being a 4-cyl. 6-cyl would be way too expensive for insurance.

Im a complete tit, just looked at my list of qoutes on go compare and noticed the insurance that was just over 2k was for a 316. Not the 318. I tried insurance for the 318 and it was just over 4k.

Dont like the look of the golf. Especially the older ones. So yeah. What are the 316 2 doors like ?

I have an E36 316i Coupe (2 door) manual in Boston Green, 1997 (P reg). Its got 130k miles on it but to be honest, it could have 30k miles on it as its so quiet! They also have cam 'chains' so no worries about snapping belts!!!

Its going up for sale in a couple of weeks, just need to MOT it this weekend.

dude, no matter what you get insurance companies are going to bend you over with ridiculous quotes. My first car was a 306 I paid £1500 for annual insurance . Looking back now I would not have bothered.

I know its sh#t but get a polo drive or something similar around the 1.2 mark and get your no claims bonus under your belt. No matter what car you go for and also no matter how many years NCB you have age is the most important factor.

Id recommend checking out ecarinsurance and also buy a WhatCarUsedCarPriceGuide, its like 3 quid and lists all the insurance groups for cars which will help you. This is what I done with my first ride, also make a list of all possible cars which you wouldn't mid having. Also if you compare the quotes for you for 318 and 320 difference will only be 200- 300 @ Max

ive got a 318ti and a 528 sport. You simply cannot beat a bmw and ive tried!! If you are struggling to get insurance on a 318, try a 320 and 323... it sounds strange but when i was 18/19 and had a 316 compact my mate was getting lower quotes on a 323 than he could on a 318is.

The compact is the one that looks like the backend was cut off by a guillotine, the interior is different too, dash etc, and the engine tweaked aswell I believe.

Yeah too be honest i like the look of the coupes alot more. But if the insurance is cheaper ont compact that might be the deciding factor. So come on barry how much are you selling yours for, i told you id be interested

I'm only looking for a grand for it. Others of the same age go for around £1800+, but its got a small knock on the passenger door (right at the bottom and hardly noticable).

Plus I just want it out the way.

Oh, just put a new exhaust on it too from the cat back.
