So I've decided to get myself an NC30. A mate of mine used to have one and they have always appealed to me. I was set on getting a TT600 or a speed four, however after giving one a test ride at the weekend they're a tad too fast, far to easy to be doing three figure speeds Laughing

Anyway its a UK bike, 1991 NC30 taxed and tested for £999. Only thing is it only has 10,000 miles on the clock? for a bike that is advertised as very clean and tidy this seems rather cheap?! I don't have that much knowledge on these bikes when it comes to what they are worth but after having a quick look about it makes me a little suspicious.

Bargain or potential lemon?

If you find a UK spec NC30 for a grand I'd like to shake you by the hand. I expect at least 16000kms on the clock then. However, it is popular to fit a mechanical KM/MPH converter to{edited for GsxrMick!} Grey Import {edit} Wink NC30's meaning it could potentially have done 16000 miles or less. Still, that isn't /too/ bad, and I picked up my NC30 for £900. However it is a 1995 with 18000kms showing on the clock. It does have a mechanical speedo converter too though.

My advice would be look and be skeptical. The things I would check are:

That the exhaust isn't holed or blowing anywhere;

That the brake discs aren't warped;

That it starts OK on the button and the battery isn't flat (reg rec faults are common!).

and that the bodywork isn't too tatty. The bodywork can't really be replaced.

for me, £999 for a 1991 bike... /any/ 1991 bike is quite a lot of money. I wouldn't pay that for a 1991 CBR600 for example (particularly not a grey import with dubious mileage and history!). 400's are all overpriced IMO. 600's are much better value.

Not to UK ones that have MPH speedos allready. Wink

nah, stick with getting a nc30, but preferably not the one you're describing. £999 for a uk spec one sounds rediculously cheap and too good to be true. either the bloke selling it doesnt know he could get atleast 2grand for it and its in good condition, or its a complete sh*t heap. go and view it and let us know how you get on.

Corrected for you Thumbs Up Laughing

The 33bhp kit is only £30 from triumph +£30 fitting (unless you do it yourself)

That limited my Speed Four to 110mph it would hit 70 in next to no time Thumbs Up

Hahahahahahaha! You sir, are a mug sir, if you believe that /any/ NC30 is worth 2 grand. Unless it was owned by Craigs23!! Smile

If you find one that is immaculate, then fair doos, but I've never seen an immaculate NC30. Apart from Craigs23's. I've certainly never seen a UK spec one...

I'm the mug!? I bet the guy could quite easily sell it for 2grand + if he wanted to. I've been looking at the nc30 market nearly every single day for the past couple of years (yes its sad, but i love'em), and there are even jap spec 30's that can go for close to 2 grand when they're in good nick, so i have no doubt in my mind that if the bike is as described, and it is "very clean and tidy", that its a complete bargain at £999. Yes its winter, and yes the market for nc30's has dropped a bit, but uk spec nc30's are quite rare, and collectors are more likely to go for them over the jap ones, and pay top dollar for them as well. So there you go "mug", get your facts right.

I think the point Marjay was making is that no NC30 is WORTH 2 grand. You can certainly get £2k for an NC, but it's probably not worth it.

My very good condition UK NC30 only cost £1400 so to be honest I don't think a grand is bargain, just the right price for a clean NC.

I'm going to have a look at it on friday, worth a punt. I'm not 100% convinced that it is a UK bike but I'm not that fussed, if it is a mint import then it'll be reet Very Happy

I don't see the point in getting a 600cc super sports and only using half its potential, I haven't got the skill to use it how it is intended. I'm sure I'd either land myself in trouble with the law or end up hurt. I can push the BROS and have fun but it just isn't quite fast enough to excite me, so I reckon a VFR will be about right for me just now Smile

Get the Speed 4. Much better bike. Newer. More modern. Parts easier to get. Better resale value.

I wouldnt pay more tham £800 for an NC30. Whoever thinks a less than showroom condition NC is worth more than a grand needs their head looking at.

Dont get me wrong. The NC30 is a good bike but at the end of the day they are getting on a bit now and a lot are on the verge of being shagged.

NC30's aren't some magically great bike. Maybe if there was only five of them in the country, and they were all mint (like RC30's) then they might be worthy of their price. But they are heavy, the suspension on grey imports is invariably soft and squidgy, they only make 60bhp on a good day and don't look particularly modern. There are loads of them around and they are complex to work on. They attract 17-19 year olds and so have also invariably gone through /at least/ a short period of neglect.

If Yamaha or Honda made a 400 today with todays technology it would weigh 145kg and make about 75bhp. And it would sell like hot cakes. So why don't they? I don't know, I expect its a licensing thing.

There are many better and more underrated bikes out there...

The SV650 for example... weighs 169kg dry (NC30 186kg) makes 70bhp (NC30 55-60 on a good day) and you can pick one up for £1500 and spend the 'change' on sorting the suspension. And the bike is a whole lot newer and easier to get parts for. And you have some sort of tyre choice. And they are cheaper to service. And they cost less to insure.

Need I go on?

I agree with Marjay 100% and the only reason I had to go for a 400 is how short I am however I am well aware I paid over the odds for what it is.

Being a bit taller, I would have taken my £1500 and spanked it on a gixer hahahaha
