Right, Pyro passed his test today, and as such bought the best quote he could get online, Its 480ish with MCE on a GSF600S.
Offers me Direct debit payments, which I'm glad for, and so I choose the 9 month option. I wonder if its going to let me do it, being 17 and all, but yes it lets me give a hefty 160 deposit. That left my account, and then I get an email asking me to ring a premium rate number, to 'clarify' some details. Fair enough I thought, rang up, and speak firstly to some bint who had no clue what she was doing and thought she'd put me on hold while she told a guy what she wanted from the chippy realises I'm not on hold and then states that she doesnt know how to resolve my issues, or indeed what they may be, and she will get someone to ring me back.
The woman who emailed me calls back, and states that because I'm only 17, I cant legally enter a credit agreement or give direct debits (which they had already prompted me to do, and nowhere stated 18+ or indeed checked before taking my money)
Now I dont have anyone that is 18 that will do this, So I politely ask for a full refund, based that they can't provide a service they advertised and that they took a deposit for. Apparently I'm going to lose 30 quid because their website is misleading. And the bike still wont start

I had a similar problem with them today, I had insured my 650 with them in Sept just TPFT to keep it covered whilst I sold it. Anyway I sold it Saturday and the chap was coming to pick it up this afternoon at 1615 while I was at work.
So I ring MCE and tell them I want to cancel the insurance;
"Sure" they say "...return the certificate to us with a covering letter".
"Great", I say "...but that'll mean the bike is still insured until you get the letter."
"Yes, that's right", she replied,
"Isn't that illegal?" I ask "because surely the new owner is going to insure it at the same time?"
"Well, yes but we can't cancel the insurance until we have it in writing"
WTF?
"Can't I e-mail you, wouldn't that be classed as 'in writing', and can you then cancel the insurance today?"
"Yeah I suppose so but we still need the letter and certificate"
Will I ever use them again? Will I bollocks! ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |

LeeR, I think you are being a bit hard on MCE as what you have stated is pretty much standard practice. If you want to cancel insurance then you generally have to send the original certificate back to them and cancel in writing.
As for two people insuring the same thing at the same time then I am 99% sure it is not illegal. It only becomes a problem if you try and claim twice on two different insurance policies for the same thing. Besides it is all to do with having an 'insurable interest' in something, ie if that geezer binned the bike after you had sold it, you couldn't claim on your still valid insurance policy as you have no 'interest' in the bike.
Pyroforlife, you shouldn't have rung MCE on their premium rate number, always use a cheaper option - you can normally get put through to the right department. Have you not heard of the website www.saynoto0870.com ??? MCE have their normal rate numbers listed on there. ____________________ Yamaha YZF-R6 |

Pyro, how did you pay your deposit? If by some sort of card contact the issuer and stop the transaction, will save you grief if you can do this ____________________ Fallen Angel "Nae sniffing my seat now!!!!! "

| Quote: | Oh and pyro I would have a quick look into your rights regarding a refund then request to speak to a manager if they don't give you a full refund.
If the manager acts similarly (as was my experience), I'd take their name then offer them a last chance and explain how you'll be taking them to the small claims court as well as trading standards and the insurance ombudsman. |
I've now been offered full refund with no charge, but its expected to take 4-6 weeks, I'm getting a phone call tomorow to inform me of the exact date. My feeling is If they are going to have my money that long, I'm getting compensation or insurance for the time.

Unfortunately by solo direct from bank account, so the monies are gone and unretrievable.

When I was 17 I knew perfectly well I couldn't pay my insurance in installments, so I didn't try... |
Yes, I did beleive that it wasn't possible, but as I had read the terms and saw no sign of needing to be 18+ and it didnt stop me even knowing my DOB I assumed that it was ok, in my OMG I just passed I'm going for a blast excitement.

Matt/Ichy/G - thanks for the advice, I appreciate where you're coming from, I'd never had it happen before. I mean usually a few security questions, and pop the certificate back in the post, or as with Direct Line shred it, and there's never been a problem. But t'is all done and dusted now, cheers. ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |
