Hi again, been struggling all day attempting to fix my NSR. Searched through the forums to find the answer to this one but I've ran out of things to try. Hope someone can help me out.

I had a problem last week with the bike not starting, pressing the starter button just gave a click. I fixed that problem by recrimping the battery connections as they were faulty then charging the battery up. I have also taken out the alternator and gave the brushes a bit of a clean (hope this hasn't caused the next problem).

After all that I got the alternator back in today and now when I press the starter button the engine turns over but doesn't want to fire up. I checked the plug and I am getting a spark. Any ideas?

I'm preety sure that you'll have already checked this but I have got to repeat what mechanics always say to me, has it got petrol in? and does it have enough 2 stroke oil?

May be a bit of a silly question, but is the fuel tap on?

Take the little rubber tube off the bottom of the fuel tap, and make sure fuel is coming through.

Although, it should probably start using the fuel already in the carb.

With a bit of luck Keith will be along soon Wink

I'm thinking, I think the engine might actually be flooded from all those attempts at trying to get it started over the last week. How does one go about unflooding an engine?

Hi

To try and dry it out take the plug out and leave the bike to stand for a while.

All the best

Keith

Thanks guys, I've taken out the sparkplug and going to leave it for a while. How long should I leave it. A day? A week?

I usually just kick tthe bike over (not literally Mr. Green ) with the petrol turned off when by bikes are flooded and that seems to do the trick

Hi

Pretty much kick the engine over (kill switch OFF otherwise you can cover the bike in petrol and have the spark plug ignite it). A couple of hours should help to dry it all out.

All the best

Keith

Hmmm, still can't seem to get the thing working. I've left it for about 3 days now with the plug out. I put the plug in just now and then took it out again and it was wet. Should it not be dry? The problem is exactly the same as before pretty much. I cleaned the plug aswell like Tomsnrowner said aswell.

When you took the plug back out, was it wet with oil or petrol?

I'm not sure now that you mention it. What's the easiest way to tell? Smell it I guess? I'll give it another look tonight.

If it is petrol and you say you are getting a spark, it might be that the spark is too weak. Try that other plug mate.

Hi
similar thing happened to my bike, tried everything but it wouldnt start. Has the bike be left standing for a while and where did you buy the petrol from. Apparently petrol from supermarkets goes off quicker and affecets 2 strokes more than cars or 4 strokes. All i did was put some new petrol in and it worked, yippeee. Try it it might work.

I think I got it from Tesco's. It's been sitting for about 2/3 weeks. Is that long enough for the petrol to go funny? Might be worth a shot. Thanks.

I get my petrol from tesco's and my bike sits there for a day or two (read week/month) and has no problems - also the mini moto using old petrol from tesco still seems to run just fine.

I'd try a new plug first.

Then drain the carb (may have water in the float bowl) if that didn't work.

Mine was only sitting there for a few weeks, and i said it effects 2 strokes more, and it dosnt always happen, just try it.

Yeah not saying it doesn't happen mate, after all, all sorts could affect the quality of the petrol while it's sat in the containers at the petrol station.

Can I ask how do you go about draining the carb? Sounds like exactly what I need to do. Sorry if it's a stupid question but I got to learn somehow. Confused
