Personally I don't think this year's survey is as readable/enjoyable/informative as last year, but perhaps my perceptions have changed in 12 months.

My Ugly Varadero got into the top ten. Very Happy Are peoples tastes changing, are the road getting so bad that only bikes like these work for the modern Biker? Or will all the pocket rocket brigade say it isn't worth a toss unless their bikes are in the top five.

I'm normally a big fan of Ride, but can only think it's the BMW and Honda riders who can be arsed filling most of these things in. I have to say though, the Beemers really are a class act - I was a 'non-believer' until a riding mate got one and jumped off fresh as a daisy after every ride, whilst we staggered off our cramped bikes, he had no bother keeping up (loads of grunt) and they really do mega miles per gallon/tank.

Still an acquired taste to look at though.

And I also consider myself too young/too new to biking to consign myself to a BMW or Honda just yet (strange how that is - new bikers consider Hondas dull, even though they are the most successful at racing and build good bikes. Maybe it's because they are good and nothing goes wrong that they are considered dull?)

1st Overall - BMW R1200RT - score 88.28
2nd Overall - BMW K1200S - score 85.77
3rd Overall - Honda Pan European ST1300 - score 85.69
4th Overall - BMW R1200GS (2005 onwards) - 85.40
5th Overall - Honda Pan European ST1100
6th Overall - Kawasaki ZZR 1400
7th Overall - BMW R1200GS (up to 2004)
8th Overall - Honda CB1300
9th Overall - Honda CBF 1000
10th Overall - Honda Varadero

Sports Touring Category
1st - BMW K1200S
2nd - Kawasaki ZZR 1400
3rd - Honda CBR 1100 (Blackbird)
4th - Honda VFR 800
5th - Aprilia Falco

The write up for the K1200S was as follows:

"Supreme German engineering, a tank badge which guarantees quality, and power in large doses ensured BMW's K1200S came out top in our sports-tourer section. Aside from having power, which would humble many full on sportsbikes, the K1200S also lets you travel in comfort and style, making it a perfectly balanced machine for this category. You've praised its smoothness, reliability and excellent handling and comfort, both for rider and pillion. The Beemer's shaft drive has also proved a hit on longer journeys as there's no need to clean, lube or adjust a chain and creature comforts like heated grips add to the luxurious feel. You rated the K1200S so highly that it not only won its category, it came second overall in the poll."

Very Happy

As I've often said, this sort of survey is biased towards a certain type of bikes.

People who buy sports bikes tend to want everything to perform as well as possible.

People that buy commuters probably want them to be both as cheap and as reliable as possible.

Those that go for tourers are less likely to be looking at any specific bit being the best. The type of people buying the bikes listed are also more likely to be riding them fairly sedately and sticking to service intervals, etc.

Ive found over the years that ride mag is bought by people who tend to be more for the touring, even verging on the bmw owning.

to be fair its not the mags fault and we buy it because were interested and deperately hoping that a beemer is not in front.

I couldnt see rainbow motorcycles in the top shops of the north which to me was a shock, nice to know millenium is up there though, queen of strings bike is from them.

my bike is nowhere in the book this year, Sad I fear most people sold there zzr 1200's and bought the 14, I dont fit so I kept the 12 Smile

I'm more intereested in the kit that people rate than the bikes, I tend to use and buy new kit than the bikes tbh

Sportsbikes, by their very nature, do not perform "as well as possible" - they are too narrowly focused and only work on fast open A/B roads.

All bikes are compromised, but sportstourers offer the best compromise between everyday usability and sporting performance; 99% of sportsbike riders I come across cannot exploit the performance of their bikes and would probably enjoy their biking more if they were riding something a little less narrowly focused Wink
