It might - you'll have to do the mod to find out. Do a plug-chop afterwards to check the WOT fuelling.

is their any easier ways to determine other than a plug chop. Seems like a lot of work and i dont like the idea of butchering perfect new plugs.

Thanks

Very Happy Very Happy

Sorry buddy but that made me smile. A plug-chop does no harm to the plug at all and in fact should be done with a new spark plug fitted.

Ride along at full throttle for a bit (1/2 mile or so), then chop the throttle and pull-in the clutch, then kill the engine and coast to a stop. Now remove one of your plugs and look at the colour to determine what your mixture is at full throttle.

Isn't your bike fuel-injected? It would have less of an effect than his little stroker.

Quote:
Confirm your jetting with plug chops
A plug chop simply means looking at the sparkplug to determine how you are jetted at a particular throttle stage. The only tricky part is in isolating the throttle stage. Before starting, clean your sparkplug and filter and warm the bike up.

To check the main jet, which operates from 1/2 to full throttle, get the scooter up to a steady full throttle or near to it for a good few seconds, then simultaneously pull in the clutch and kill the engine. Don't let the motor drag you to a stop, or fall to an idle, because you want to isolate the plug color at full throttle.

Get off and check the sparkplug color. (Links on our tech page.) It should be a light chocolate color. If it's white, the air/fuel mixture is too lean and you need a bigger main jet. If it's black or really dark brown, the air/fuel mixture is too rich and a smaller main jet is needed. If you need to change jets, change by one size, and do another run.

No cutting tools needed. Laughing

Take a look here also, https://www.dansmc.com/EXHAUST_2.htm
My advice? Leave the bloody thing alone before it goes bang. Wink

I'd have said that Aprilia spend millions of pounds of development on two stroke exhausts, which are MUCH more essential for performance than on four strokes.

The cans are tiny anyway, so why you would want to stubby it I'll never know.

And LukeVFR, you say your bike's performance has not been affected? How can you tell? Have you dynoed it before and after the mod?

I reckon most people wouldn't notice a 10bhp difference in a 600, especially if the bike is louder to boot...

I just would like something thats custom to me. quite like the idea of a tiny can.

I was gonna buy an arrow can anyway, but thought i could stubby the original can, and if it goes tits up, then buy the arrow can.

Does stubbying a can typically mke it run rich or lean?

Thanks all Thumbs Up

If you don't do it right the first time the "going tits up" bit may be a seize or a holed piston. Shocked Is it worth taking the chance?

shit really? I thought it would make a minimum of difference. Is there anything i could do that wouldnt result in a siezed piston? change the jetting etc? Thumbs Up

Thanks all

No, it could result in a holed piston. Which is worse. Parts of the piston may be flung about inside the engine causing all sorts of untold damage.

It isn't worth it IMO.

Cans on 2 stokes make very very little difference, would be fine running without one imo.

2 stokes get all their back pressure from the expansion chamber, the cans are purely just to make them quieter.

See my dyno results for what happens when you put a set of stubby cans on a bike. I lost around 7 peak hp from stock, but loads over all, and it was running wwaaaaayyyyyy lean.

Is 2 inches really worth the effort?

By all means go for it as it wont affect your mixture that much.
