Non standard bulb in a standard bike?

I finally managed to get the blown bulb from the headlamp went to Halfords and purchased a H4 bulb as a replacement. With the old one in hand and a new one to compare I could tell that the securing lugs were not in the same place but bought it for a test fit.

It didn't fit.

Tried a bike shop today and when I said that it was a 45/45w bulb he stared at me as if I was mad and asked if I was sure. He asked if it had a 'H' number and it doesn't and bar going to the bike and ripping it out I looked like a n00b.

As far as I know the 7R is not an import, but was a Cat C at one stage and maybe, just maybe had a new front end from an imported bike is my only thought?

Would there be any other reasons why a Jap bike would have a strange non stock part like this?

H4 bulbs are H4 bulbs, its a standard fitting and there are no variations. So the one you took out sounds like it isn't a H4 bulb. You need to find the type of bulb before spending more money.

Prior to halogen bulbs becoming the norm, and H4 bulbs being almost standard for dip/main combinations, the usual was a non-halogen with a circular base with a couple of small cut outs. It sounds like that may be what you have, as they carried on using them in lower power applications like smaller bikes.

Position of the filament determines whether it is dip or main beam. Be entirely possible to have a higher wattage main beam than dip beam.

My import cbr400 take's "japanese" h4's as there known slightly different position but people have dremeled the holder to fit "UK" h4's i think david silver does the import bulbs for about £5- £6 but that was a few years back. edit* i just looked and on david silver there £5.50 each if they are the same as my 400

Well I popped into an Aladins cave of a shop and although the microfiche suggests the UK spec bike has a 45/45w bulb it seems that they are as common as rocking horse droppings. So, I walked out of the shop with some H4 bulbs (again), this time the securing lugs had been chopped off with some pliers by the very helpful bloke behind the counter and job done.
