The subject says it all really. You know the gay castle bolts that honda typically use to hold their engine in the frame? Is there a way to get them undone without spending a small fortune buying a socket off honda? I am not bothered about keeping the bolt, I just want the engine out.

I have found a crap picture of one on google that may give you an idea of what i'm on about.

Get a normal socket of a suitable diameter and cut notches in it to suit the castellations.

Or do what I do and use a hammer and drift Smile

What is the success rate for the hammer and drift?

You don't need to undo it to take the engine out.

It should be a 13mm HEX (allen) key socket to undo it and a normal socket on the other side then it will pull out easily.

I swapped a 600 F Sport engine a few weeks back and definetely did not undo any castle nuts.

Hope it helps.

Often for a top hat shaped nut that goes into a threaded hole to adjust the clearance (or a lock nut on such a nut / bolt). Reduces the amount of clearance required.

All the best

I know the answer to that, just can't remember it!! Laughing it's in the Haynes manual, I remember reading about it... something to do with bolt tension or something?? cant remember now!! Very Happy

So what's their excuse for using them to hold C90 clutch baskets on with then?

The bikes i work on at college use them on the clutch as well (GZ125's) and a few of the big bikes, i think you can tighten up a castlated nut more than a normal nut without the risk of rounding it, or something along those lines anyway...

i can ask the teacher if anybody really wants to know

I'd check out the price of the tool from Honda, it's not as expensive as you might think, and probably cheaper than buying a socket to cut up to make your own. Guess how I know this.

I think they are used in applications where the nut is recessed into a hole and there's no clearance to get a socket around it.

The castle nuts on the cbr's (fsport.f4i, fx) for instance... the castle nuts are attatched to the frame and do not need to be taken off to remove anything... so the question was more whats the point in these nuts? that seemingly do nothing.

Mine is the double ended version like the above one, these are the only 2 sizes of castle nut's that Honda have ever used so I won't need to by any more.

You want to try getting the headstock bearing races out of a KLE500 or a KLR650. No fewer than six special tools required!

As Kickstart said they are often used to adjust the clearance between the frame and engine. Many modern bikes use the engine as a stressed-member so it has to be a snug fit in the frame mounts. Since this is a bit impractical by direct-bolting ( due to frame manufacturing tolerances) they use these adjuster-bolts with castle-tops and larger castle-top locknuts to remove any engine-to-frame clearance during assembly. If you can remove and re-fit the engine in a bike with them fitted, they are in need of adjusting beause the gap is too loose.

Yeah, as Geri said.

My SRAD's got one. Got it out with a suitable sized chizel. Used it like a screwdriver Smile
