Hi i am new to this forum so to start off with i would like to say hi to everyone. I'm a aborn again biker and been back on the road for a couple of years riding a 600 bandit. But have very little in the way of mechanical know how. So i am after a bit of advice if anyone can help.
Last week my bike failed to start, it would turn over but not fire. I replaced the battery as the old one would not hold charge. I took tank off checked the filter in tank for gunk (it was fine). Checked tap operation and all fuel lines for blockages etc (fine). I have now replaced the plugs and the bike will start, but only on 2 cylinders 1 + 2. I am getting a spark on 3 + 4 but not firing. I thought maybe a coil gone but if so would that not cause maybe cylinders 1 + 3 not to fire as 3 + 4 on are on seperate coils? As far as i can tell all electrics work fine.

If antone got any ideas i would appreciate it. Thanks

Hi.
My 400 Bandit does something very similar when its low on juice !!
It doesnt like being on reserve and will often run on 3 when it gets that low.
Always best to start at the really easy options and work up. Very Happy

Also these connections pictured (orange and yellow ) were loose on mine, so tightened them up and wd40'd them.

Make sure that choke linkages are both opening and closing (fully) the choke flaps on all four cylinders.

Are you sure it's turning over?
Could just be your starter motor spinning but the solenoid not engaging.
Have you tried bump starting?

Think that answers that.

My GSX used to do the same if it wasn't run for a bit. Just left it running on two and the others kicked in eventually.

Make sure the plugs are clean, try heating them up with a blow torch and see if it makes a difference. Are the plugs wet if you take them out when it won't start?

As has already been said, sounds like fuel starvation. I would wip the carbs off and give them a clean. BTW what colour were the old spark plugs you took out? I take it you are running with the standard ar box and not pod filters?

All the best, Joe

as others have said. i think its a fuel starvation issue.

If your getting a spark, and the air filters ok then the only other thing needed is fuel. You say you have checked the fuel tap and line so it must be further down the line. Id suspect the carbs too.

either clean them, pay to have them cleaned or just buy a working set.

Guys if you read the original post the OP said that his bike is running on two cylinders.

Now before you start ripping your carbs to bits or buying new ones just open the drain screws and see if any fuel comes through. If it does then it means the bowls are filling up as they should. If not then there could well be a blockage in the fuel supply between carb 2 and 3. Next crank the bike over and check if the plugs are wet. If they are then the carbs are supplying fuel. If you have a compression tester just check the pressure is ok. This rules out a problem in the gasket between the two barrels.

You could swap the plugs over between the working and non working barrels and also the leads from the shared coils. This rules out any ignition problems.

if its still not running at this point then I would strip and clean the carbs.
