I had an 8 x 6 on my Hornet, that was ok.

Going for a 7 x 5 on the mille, I think 6 x 4 looks too small and may get a pull. 7 x 5 is the ideal compromise IMO.

And yeah all 1 liners are illegal.

Unfortunately it also needs to be illuminated, so having your 'zorsts between the light and the plate may encourage the long arm of the law to be extended in your direction.

That said, most folks get away with it most of the time, and only usually seem to get rectification certificates.

Knowing my luck, the whole damn book would be flung at me.

Thers a black '07 plate gixxer 1000 at my college with a black and silver plate that looks to be at least 6 x 4

to be fair it looks nice but god knows how he's never been pulled!

back to the main subject
1 line plates are illegal on motorcycles regardless of size, accept on really old bikes with the plate on the front mud guard

A friend of mine just bought a new plate from ebay. It is quite alot smaller but still has legal sized numbers and letters.

Black & Silver plates can only be used on the road if the vehicle is registered before 1973. My first car had them, looked the dogs in those day.

Strange thing is, there is a black Merc (S600 or something) local to me who has got black plates, had them for years. So may be the gixxer rider wont get pulled. Thinking

My college is in south west london, id say they have more important things like regular shootings to deal with than one bike and its black and silver plate,

Then again they seem to do anything to get another bike off the road these days!

As from this month its all changed again...

Bike plates have to be a fixed size, letters a single font and size, no backgrounds, no logos other than GB or euro flag, must carry a type approval marking and show the postcode of the manufacturer.

So even my legal plate with its Aprilia badge is now illegal Laughing

i got a £30 fine for "failing to dispay index plate" when i was pulled for my 7x2 single liner. I went home and thought well if i get that for displaying a readable plate i might aswell go smaller, it'll work out cheaper in the end Wink

Is anyone able to provide some official documentation on number plate guidelines? I had a read through the strategy PDF and it doesn't actually quote any figures - I'll have a look tomorrow but if anyone has something to hand that would save me the trouble. I'd quite like to have some actual figures in case PC Plod decides to pull me over.

In fact thinking about it I was pulled earlier in the year and the copper remarked that it was nice to have a full size plate on a motorcycle for a change (I did at the time). I said that I was thinking of making it smaller, to which he said "hopefully not to a single line, as they are illegal". I said "no, just to a smaller square" to which he didn't respond - perhaps they aren't sure themselves?
