i guess the powerband of a highy tuned 2 stroke is unbeatable. Maybe people who enjoy hands on approaches to engines like them too. I have a lambretta-nothing beats the smell of that 1960s 2 stroke! |

Two strokes -
Sound Better (multi pot stroker on open pipes makes my willy hard).
Are more satisfying to ride than an equivalent sized 4T (better sensation of power coming in / dropping off, and more demanding to ride well).
Are simple to maintain and rebuild, which makes them almost everlasting.
Are generally lighter and stiffer than an equivalent 4T engine.
Besides four stroke technology was designed for diesel engines ____________________ 18:54:48 Rob Fzs: jews don't give away stuff for free

4 strokes are less efficient as far as power per cc goes, similarly tuned ones have much worse service intervals, cost more to rebuild, don't smell nice, are heavy and sound like a wet fart. So why does everyone love them so much?
I do like the revvy kick you get from a sports orientated 2 stroke.
In the trail-riding world, 2 strokes with similar power tend to be around 10% lighter than their 4 stroke equivalents.
As far as 125s go, they make a lot more power and are massively more reliable than a 4 stroke would be if you tuned it to that power output.
| daz_d_biker wrote: | Rev higher, smell awsome, faster, easier to work on... You would NOT hate two strokes if you've ridden an RD500/RG500. I just love the powerband- no power... no power...no power... POWER!!!! I'm not saying i hate 4t's, as i have a few.

I haven't ridden the big RD/RGs, but don't really quite see the fascination - at least something like an RS250 has an area where it's a fair bit ahead of any 4 stroke bike (weight).
Think generally 4 strokes rev higher, at least when comparing similar bikes - just because they have to, to get half decent power out. |

I loved my MkII RD125LC about 12bhp (probably less) and 65-70mph as standard but fettled was a monster (to me at 18 it was anyway). Good ringgyding sound from the allspeed pipe, that loverly smell of 2 stoke oil burning away and so easy to work on the engine, no mechanical valves to set just get the rat tailed file in there to smooth out the wrinkles, arms feeling like they were about to pop out of their sockets when i reached 6000rpm.....makes me want to go back 18 years I remember peering through the local bike shop window drooling at the two RG500's in there wishing i was rich or had a job that payed more than 40 quid a week......ahhh the times we had that bike and i..... ____________________ Simson S51 Enduro, Kawasaki AR80, Yamaha RD125LC, Yamaha XV535, Yamaha XJ600N, Suzuki GS1100G, Kawasaki KLR250, Yamaha BT1100 Bulldog (4/4/08 Deceased). G, the RG500 is light as fOOk. It's the ultimate stroker and Japan's final f.off to the notion of power with rideability. Granted the stock chassis is a bit wank but that's not the point. ____________________ 18:54:48 Rob Fzs: jews don't give away stuff for free

Well having only come to two wheels lately, I can only comment on 2 stroke karts. I have driven (piloted?) them on quite a few occasions and found it to be the best way to grin EVER! It just seems like you 'chase' the revs up the scale. You wind it on a bit, the fueling catches up, then you wind it on a bit more and so on. Like you need to feather the throttle to fall in the sweet spot in the rev range...
And they just don't stop revving either, which is frankly NUTS.
I would shit myself on a 250 2stroke bike. But I'd do it in a blink. |

Maybe tuned differently to the bikes then. A performance two stroke bike will bog, stutter and fart at low revs. Then they gradually climb pulling you along at an increasingly rapid rate but lagging behind the throttle as you describe with the karts.
Then they all of a sudden go absolutely apeshit, the tacho needle bounces to the redline in the blink of an eye and either catapults you forward, does a wheelie or both. Once you hit that, you can't change gear quickly enough to keep up with it.
Note on the following video how the bike wheelies at the very top of the rev range. This is the bike not the rider. The rider will be trying to hold it down.
